Hi. I've managed to get Second Life installed fine (using the latest version of Cedega) and can run it fine (using that WineX build that's been posted elsewhere, under the name SeocndLifeLinux.tar.gz; though modified slightly to run in /opt instead of $(HOME)). While the game starts up and runs fine, eventually the graphics will lock up and the streaming music will start stuttering.
The first time this happpened, it was before I connected while I set going through the Preferences. I tried clicking a few things, including Quit, and a few minutes later it eventually quit.. partly. I had to kill WineX manually.
The second time I was in a fullscreen game walking around. I alt-tabbed out, and saw SL shutting down OpenGL (though it didn't seem to fully do so). Eventually the music smoothed back out, almost like the game unfroze, but I was unable to get back into the game. There was nothing on the taskbar and I couldn't alt-tab back into it. Had to kill it again.
The third (and last time, so far), I had it running windowed. When it froze up, I alt-tabbed away, attempting to wait awhile to see if it'd fix itself. It didn't. I hit the Close button on the titlebar and it started shutting down automatically, but eventually froze up my entire system (the mouse was jerky, and I couldn't interact with anything). Had to reboot.
Has anyone had similar experiences? Anyone know what could cause it and maybe how to fix it?

Some more information would be helpful: What video card do you have? What Linux distro? What version of the drivers are you using? What version of which X server are you running?

I don't see anything obviously problematic there. Does the card work normally in other 3D games? If you've also got Windows on that machine, does SL work normally with it?

Yeah, the card works good with other games (as good as can be expected, anyway... it's no Geforce 6800 ). Unfortuantely I don't have Windows on this machine, though. However, I did upgrade my kernel to 2.6.11-r4 (w/ Gentoo patches) recently. I had some problems with that version of WineX not running (it was conflicting with glibc w/ NPTL), buit those were resolved by getting Point2Play and getting the latest Cedega (to install it) and WineX 3.2.1 (to run it) from there. The one time I did try it, it played good.. didn't freeze up or lose the connection. My entire system seems to be responding better since the kernel upgrade, so I'm hedging my bets that that's the reason.
