Missing 3/4s of My Inventory?????????

I am just floored. I just logged into SL, and out of 44,500 items in my inventory, there are only 13,700 left!

I am beside myself. The originals of things I have made. Tons of expensive stuff that I've bought. This is devastating, and I cannot #@$! believe we do not have a backup to local tool in this client.

I'm just speechless, sitting here with my head in my hands.

Please tell me this is some sort of joke. Even better, tell me there's server-side backup to roll this back to before whatever asset server exploit was allowed to wipe out thousands of real world dollars worth of assets (every single piece of clothing I own is gone, and all of my inventory folders (containing virtually everything I've created and owned) are completely empty), let alone more than a year's worth of business inventory.

Devastated, furious, disbelieving

Sue.

I couldn't possibly feel more foolish than I do right now. My first official freak-out on the forums and it was something I should have been able to figure out myself.

Tina, I owe you my first born, two death-by-chocolate cakes and the poolboy of your choice. Clearing my cache did work. I should have known to do this instinctively because of all of the problems with the asset server lately. I paniced and didn't think this through. With the nature of the recent asset server exploit, my first thought was, oh my god, I've been hacked and everything's gone. I'm done.

The fact that this kind of loss is actually possible just drives home the need to be able to back up, at the very least, our own creations to our own local drives. Depending entirely on an online server that is plagued with hacks and exploits is not a comforting thought.

Enough of my rant. Thank you so much for taking the time to bail me out of this little nightmare, Tina. I'm so very grateful.

Sue.

I would be grateful for ideas on protecting assets. I think I should probably be storing duplicate copies of my business inventory in storage prims outside of my inventory at the very least. What are other people doing to protect their ass.....ets?

This was a good wake-up call for me, and I know I need to be smarter about taking care of the things that I depend on for a living in here.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Anything I don't want to lose and is copyable, I keep in a second 'backup' folder in my inventory and also in storage prims. As for the product that I sell I'm not usually worried since there is a copy in my JEVN servers, my SLX servers and the SLB servers.

Sue, don't feel bad. I've been going through the accounts of the people in my household today and seeing random devastation in the inventories. Every single one was missing at least one body part and it was a struggle to find one outfit that wasn't missing parts for them to wear. I've tried clearing, rebooting, switching between accounts, etc. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Backing it up to other folders was useless - sometimes all copies of a given asset were hosed.

For me personally, I tend to send full perms copies of anything I can to one of my alts. Unfortunately, for purchased items, this doesn't work. I really don't know what to do anymore. I know too many people, myself included, who had sims rolled way back on them and who lost items that had been in world a week, so it sort of seems damned if you do and damned if you don't. We badly need the ability to back up inventory.

(Although in my case, I think this is just my month to be hosed. Aside from this today, my main hard drive erased itself last Friday and the backup software apparently only appeared to be functional for the last few months. Two hard drives, multiple backups, and I still lost months of work.) :(

I asked LIVE HELP about this, its only temporary.
None of the missing items are actually missing, they should be back with the new update.
no need to worry im told.
