I am using an ATI FireGL V3100 Pentium 4 (SSE2). It makes my avatar's face flash and flicker black. This is a robust computer (2 G RAM, 3.8, etc.). What is the problem? Is there a fix, or do I have to switch to NVidia?

Are all your drivers up to date? Motherboard, video, etc. Since the ATI FireGL V3100 is workstation card designed for CAD applications and the like, I'm not sure how well it will work with SL. I have zero experience with them.

Try turning off avatar vertex program if you have this switched on, in advanced graphics

Do other people see you with a black face, or only yourself on your machine?
A Linden explained to me that certain personal textures (for example, faces) are processed on your graphics card and uploaded back to the server for use by everyone who can see you. If these textures are processed with errors by hardware or drivers, people will see you with the badly processed textures.
When I had a black face seen by myself and others, it was a hardware issue with my AGP slot on my motherboard. A problem with misaligned slot connector pins caused people to see me with a black face, and eventually with horizontal black lines across all lower body. Replacing the motherboard with the bad AGP slot solved the issues (no software was changed to affect a cure).
