I need some help from someone. I am trying to download WAV sounds to SL....the websites that I have gone to for sounds seem to not be compatible with SL because of their speed.

Could someone direct me to a good site...I especially need animal sounds...tyvm.

yeah, use sound editor to change the type of file

then set it to 44.1 sound donuts. (can't think of the term Kilohertz? something like that) :-) Best of luck. ~ Perse

Sophie,

I use a free program called "Audacity" to resample them to the correct frequency. Very easy to do and it does not take long. Much more you can do with Audacity!

Here is the link:

Hey guys -- for this conversion task, I recommend r8brain. Will convert files of other "speeds" (sample rates) to what's needed. Funny name, great results, and VERY easy to use! Has a super batch mode for converting loads of files. Get it here:

http://www.voxengo.com/r8brain/

Spread the word.

There are tons of sounds all over the web, try findsounds.com as a search engine and also the many websites which specialize in collections for Flash multimedia, you'll find good ones.

The free utilities mentioned already in this thread will work for SL, but for those willing to invest a little money into proffessional grade audio, Adobe Audition (formerly Cool Edit Pro) is my favorite audio editor. It gives you virtually all the tools of a professional recording studio right on your desktop. Very straightforward, intuitive interface. It's $299 US, so it's not a real small investment, but if you're interested in audio, it's worth every penny. I've been using it for all my audio projects from recording to editing for about 2 years now, and I absolutely love it.

Hrmm I preferred it when it was CoolEdit Pro, seems to have lost some of its functionality when it went to Adobe for some really strange reason. This is however not something I would be recommending here, other than to give Adobe a free advertisement. Adobe Audition is for recording and mixing sounds, and completely not worth it ($299) for the purposes these people are talking about, and even more so when considering that only a maximum of 10 second clips can be uploaded to SL.

That's why I first made it a point to endorse the free utilities already mentioned by others. I then went on to mention a product which I love that not only will function for SL purposes, but for many other purposes as well. Think of it in the same way one might recommend Photoshop for image editing even though it does a thousand times more than just what you'd do with it for SL.

As for what you said about functionality loss when Adobe bought the program, yes and no. Audition 1.0 was missing some of the features of Cool Edit Pro 2.0. However, the current version, Audition 1.5, goes way above and beyond what CEP was ever capable of. (Well, with the acception of Red Rover. That was a substantial loss. I really hope they come up with a substitute for it.)

As for the 10 second thing, I know of no better program to take a lengthy recording and break it seamlessly into 10 second blocks. Just the other day in fact, I stumbled across a bannana phone object that played a little clip of the "bananna phone" song. The clip drove me nuts because it was missing a beat and the cuts were clearly audible every time it looped. Within five minutes, I used Audition to extract the very same portion of the song plus the missing beat, I adjusted it so that it would loop without any audible cuts, I uploaded it, and gave it to the owner of the phone. That's an example of where a professional grade audio tool was completely appropriate and necessary for use with SL, so please don't blanketly say something is overkill until you've properly weighed all the potentials.

So, to summarize, you're right that Audition is not worth the investment if all you want to do is resample some pre-existing sounds for SL. There are any number of free utilities available for that. If you have a Creative sound card, it probably came with one anyway. However, if you want the capability to do that AND to do a lot more like make your own sounds, mix and edit music, produce video sound tracks, add effects, remove vocals from songs, break recordings into pieces that SL can handle, etc. then Audition is for you.

:) here is what the sounds need to be saved as..........i got this info from the sl wiki how to guides........

To upload sounds, open the File menu and select Upload Sound.
Valid sounds are any .WAV file in standard PCM format, 16 bit/44KHz/Mono, less than 10 seconds in length. (9.99 seconds is fine, but 10.0 will fail to upload.) Sounds cannot be saved as 8-bit, 22KHz or any other frequency, or stereo. Sounds in other formats can be converted in most sound programs. There is currently no support for compression formats such as MP3.

....i found that i already had sound editing software in my pc inside of my roxio easy cd creator program...(if you have roxio) it is called audio central sound editor....

after you play or open the sound..save as........wav....pcm...make it 16 bit....make it 44.1 khz....and then last but not least..... mono

it will then go into sl no prob..at least its worked for me.......
and any of the sound editing programs that were suggested are wonderful also as long as you use the above info to save the sound as ....good luck :D

You're mistaken about the stereo thing. ALL my sounds are 44.1kHz 16 bit stereo. I don't know where you got the impression they had to be mono.

Remember, just like graphics converters, not all audio converters are created equal when downsampling (or upsampling, even)... the quality of the filters can vary greatly. I haven't kept up with the latest in resampling tests ever since my departure from techno music, but basic rule is: if it sounds good, then it is good. And, you're most graciously welcome, Pixie!

Chosen, in response to that wiki entry, YES that's indeed incorrect data and may have been true at an earlier time, but not today! I should go and fix that. :)

All the stereo sounds I've ever uploaded get one channel stripped off. Of course, it's been a while... Does it mix the channels now?
