I've spent the past hour trying to change my clothes so I could go to an event that started at 1pm. I can't change my clothes, I get this pop up message: Can't Change appearance until clothing and shape are loaded.
I have relogged numerous times, even rebooted my computer. I have tried to rebake. I look like a freaking nerd, half dressed and can't do squat about it, prim hair mixed with Linden hair.
Why do the Lindens keep up<down>grading the client, making it worse every time. And no one to go to for help either - since they eliminated the help request. What is a PAYING person to do?
I know another world that is in beta, guess it's time to look around.

That error indicates that the asset server hasn't pushed your shape to your inventory yet. Wait it out, it'll usually appear in a few minutes tops. As for the help, it has been explained and new procedures are in place. Look at the blog. I sugges you view the knowledgebase first or search this forum for others having your same problem.

I think that 15 minutes is adequate time. I don't pay SL to spend my days reading what has happened to others and spending all my time trying this and that in vain. As for no help, I'm sure that was to cut costs. God knows they're making enough money off the paying people, those of us with lots of land too.... so I think this time it's up to SL to do some fixing.

when that happens i just go out flying straight forward at max hight, usually after passing a couple regions the shape and clothing appears again

If you'd actually READ something that was suggested to you, you'd see that they are ramping up their support staff and triaging things. In other words, it's going to be handled like a real help desk should instead of a free for all. The live help in its old form wasn't scalable to 40k residents. Tier One of support is to look at the provided knowledgebases. I'm sure there is something for you to try. But since I know you'll just continue to whine and make rash generalizations, feel free to waste somebody at LL's time and add to an already-overtaxed system with your complaint.
