if your using windows (which i will assume) you can right click on some empty space on the desktop, choose properties

ittl open up a new window, select the settings tab and your video card will be listed about half way down

Try this

; click start / run /
; type in dxdiag
; enter,

then check Display1 (something like that), you can see what vid card you have.

SL has some issues even with newer drivers saying they are out of date latly, gotten it a few times myself either -noprobe on shortcut help or clean/reinstall the vid drivers do.

Some software make that msg pop up to, only one i know of is asus err..whats it name again (some thing i had installed before : p ) made it show up, Enchanted drivers for temp reading/gpu fan speed thing.

If I'm not mistaken, GMA stands for Graphics Media Accelerator, and is a built-in graphics solution made by Intel. Its normally on the low end and intended for business use, excel, word, playing some movies, etc, but will be unsuitable for use with SL. Sadly, If you can get it to work properly, it will run slow, as you have mentioned.
