A post in the hotline about ping rates is what has me wondering about this. I've noticed ping rates in the sim where I have my shop go to 3000 and so forth all the time, and not where I live, or in other places. I figure this is because of the club next to my shop. Now I don't mind the club being there and causing all kinds of lag, because they probably bring me more customers than I would lose due to any lag! But I'm thinking - is it the case that with you have a bunch of AVs in a Sim - say dancing at a club - it will cause the ping rate to do that? And if so, are we stuck with that forever? It also causes FPS to drop from 45 to about 43 (and my own personal FPS to go from 15-25-30 to 1.6 or so. coco

Cocoanut. While ping is normally beyond your control, your own personal FPS is highly related to the performance of your computer. Getting an FPS of 1.6 is definitely a concern. I used to get this as well, having my fps drop from 70 down to 2 or 3 and finally realized it was due to the new local lighting in the 1.7 update. I am not sure if this has been solved in the recent rolling updates, but the combination of local lighting turned on + avatars with lots of highly detailed jewelry will bring your computer to its knees. Two things you can do for the moment is: 1. Turn off local lighting if it really isn't that necessary. 2. Go to your graphics options panel, and drag the 'avatar detail' slider down a little (experiment) whenever you have a crowd near you. This basically reduces the granularity at which your computer renders the geometry of avatars and their attachments. Slide it down to the lowest setting and then zoom in and out on your own avatar to see this effect. Avatars will look kinda scrappy and cartoony. This is an opportunity to take funny screenshots of your friends! Just bear with the Lindens while they will eventually get this resolved. Hope this helps.
