I'm soon moving and going form a 3mb cable line to a 385kb up/down WiMAX connection...my question is, will that be enough? Its possible for me to upgrade to 1mb/385kb, but I don't really have that money right now. Any input would help.

When I first started playing the game, I had a very similar connection speed to what you're downgrading to. It worked fine for me, but clearly things like streaming was out, and I had to wait in place a lot longer for things to rez. I did turn down my video settings in the game though to help speed things up (draw distance lowered, details lowered, etc.) That seemed to help a lot. Once you get that speed, go into settings and just keep playing trial and error until you find the combination that will work for you.

As Esch says it should work just slow to download all the textures. You'll need to tell SL to use less bandwidth when downloading (not in game at the moment so can't remember where that setting is) - when everythings downloaded you should be able to listen to streaming just be aware it slows down downloading more should you move location. So best to turn it on once everythings rezzed.

Install Netlimiter, set SL to use only 385 kb and see how that works for you.

I played on a shard T1 through version 1.8 and rarely was able to pull more than 3-400k; but it worked okay. You will see packet loss now and again, but keep your client bandwidth setting at 350 or 400. It's much more satisfactory than watching things render one prim at a time with a lower setting and never any packet loss.
