Okay, I have been posting about this for a while but I have been experiencing this off and on for a ver very very long time also.

Since this is the technical issues forum, is it too much to ask that someone from LL actaully *answer* this post and give all the people experiencing this some idea of what it is or at least acknowledge it as a problem?

Symptoms:

This happens across different machines, for different prople and through many releases of SL (since before 1.6 for certain). If it happens to you, it may (or may not), happen to the person right beside you in the same sim.

It begins when FPS is generally good and ping readings are fine (for me this is about 65 or so on both user and sim), no packet loss, no time dilation, but then out of the blue....

"Waves" of lag, usually every two or three seconds, each lasting about a second where the entire world freezes, the music stream stutters, typing stops etc. It sometimes happens when you initiate a key movement to turn, but that could be just when you notice it cause you are expecting to move and you dont. Similarly it's also noticeable when the music is stuttering, but it's likely not related to that.

The only true, repeatable symptom is (for me anyway) the pings are racing up and down the scale (usually with the user ping and the sim ping being at odds with each other). One rises into the thousands while the other stays in two digits or even goes down, then they reverse places sometimes.

The attatched "fast timers" pics were taken 800 metres up far away from any objects, textures, geometry, etc. but the readings are exactly the same no matter where you are and no matter what geomtry is in the area.

In between the pulses, everything is running fast and smooth and all the bars are tiny and right over on the left-hand side, just as you would expect hanging in the air away from everything in an empty sim.

In the top right corner you can also see both the pings sliding up and down the scale over the course of the three pictures being taken (less than 30 seconds elapsed time).

What it appears like, is that due to some network screwup or the inability of SL code to handle the varying network conditions, that the entire game is freezing waiting (in this case) for an image update. At other times the bar indicates I am waiting for a geometry update, but I dont have pictures of that yet.

Obviously there is no image that I am waiting for 800 Metres in the air and obviously even if I was, the entire game shoujldn't freeze waiting for a single jpeg or even several.

Pictures follow: (3)

Just wanted to update, Dianne... I'll be asking further about this "pulse lag"--any others experiencing similar issues can also post their screenshots in the big thread you started (it helps to have them all in one!):

In my experience, Dianne, the more information you provide on these forums, the fewer responses you get. On another thread I spent literally hours getting all kinds of information which I was asked for, and when I finally provided it, there was no response at all.

You might be luckier with Torley. :)

I experienced Pulse Lag too with the 1.8 Linux client, but after 1.9.0 it was gone altogether. What helped in my case was to switch off Sky Rendering in the Debug menu. This led to fancy images where the sky has been but I could play without lag. For screenshots of Fast Timers, see the big thread[tm].

I started getting this in 1.8, happened almost every day. Now in 1.9 it happens like 2 or 3 times a week and I'm on almost every night.

Torley is fabulous! :D
(although I probably push her to the breaking point with my complaining, she never complains back)

Thanks Zi, :)

Forgot about his advice, have to try it when I get the pulsing again to see if it helps.

Untill the release of the new "fixer" 1.9 SL was running pretty much smoothly for me, but after the release it's been bad. Really bad. I'm having problems constantly, and it's starting to get to the point where I almost don't bother to log in anymore, cau'se I know it will be too laggy.

I have the samething since the most recent optional update (1.9.0(18)). Which of course I installed to try to fix the invisibility issues.

So now I am not invisible, just have this horrendous lag that hits every few minutes, and lasts anything up to a minute or two. If it goes any longer than that, then when it stops I find I am unable to anything other than turn in circles.
Like Diane has noted I also see ping server hit 10000 or so, while my own ping is in the very low 3 figures. Also like Diane it happens if I try to do anything like turn.

I haven't been able to get any screenies of the fast timers, but have seen them just the same as in Diane's pics when it is happening (that is only if I actually happen to have fast timers on when it hits, but then I can't get the screenshot, as my whole comp is locked up). Most the time I am so locked up I can't even open a menu to get the screenies. Then by the time I can move again, they have gone back to normal.
This is happening so many times a day and at such frequent intervals that it is rendering SL unplayable, well playable but intensely frustrating.

i tried this and thought it instantly fixed my problem, but it seems that like clearing the cache and changing to/from fullscreen, it was only a temporary fix, and it came back full force after repeating my usual steps to bring forth the chop :(
