ripple water on the way back?

Awhile ago, we had an option in the graphics menu for "ripple water. " The effect never worked well (never worked at all for some people) and it looked cheesy when it did work. The effect was accomplished (I think) with vertex shaders. I believe this was before Nvidia cards supported CG, which supposedly makes developing shaders much easier. I notice in the c:\program\files\secondlife folder that there is now a folder called CG and inside that folder are waterfragmentsimple.cg and watervertex.cg.

Is rippled water coming back? Will it work and look great this time?

No screenshot but it was pretty sucky. Only worked with ATI based cards and it wasn't ripple it was tidal surge. Anything near or on the water would see effectively 1 meter waves. It was way too much especially near the coastline. You won't miss it, believe me.

It looked like **** and i beleive the programer who wrote it left LL and it was removed because it couldn't be gotten to work with the revamped rendering engine.

SL water is pretty lame.

I've got a shot of it somewhere that someone gave me. I'll post it if I can find it. As Kat said, it only worked on ATI cards. All it really seemed to do was to put things close to sea level underwater. Not good.

Ripple water does work on some Nvidia cards. I have an old Ti4200 card that could do ripple water. However, anything later than the GeForce 4 series cannot do ripple water.

It's amazing that LL can't write a shader in this day and age. Shall we help them?

Will someone at LL please download the Nvidia CG Toolkit:
and investigate these two code samples, using the included CG BROWSER:

cg_water.cg and cg_water2.cg

You're welcome. :)
