I can log into the latest Second Life First Look, but when it comes to tp-ing to a really low traffic area I crash, I crash every single time, doesn't matter what sim I'm in.

At this same time on the main Second Life I can only get as far as 'Connecting to region...'
then my task manager says 'not responding' every single time.

THIS IS BAFFLING! This whole seems illogical.

Why might this be happening please?

Well 2 days ago I had an issue with the First Look client where I could log in, but the client would crash right at the point where I would have been able to see myself and walk around. This happened after repeated restarts. I fixed it by clearing the cache in preferences. (On the log in screen, click Preferences, and then click on the Network tab, and then click Clear, followed by OK.) You have to quit and then restart SL in order for the cache to clear.

If you're hanging on 'Connecting to region...' that seems to indicate a connection problem, although it's not necessarily in your home. I've seen this when my broadband provider was having temporary issues, and of course I've also seen it when SL has over 20,000 people logged on (and there are around 27,000 people online right now).

The best thing to do with this thread is to rename it to describe the problem and see how many other people have it. If it's a couple of people with similar systems and likely problem with your computers then you can help each other in finding a solution, if not it'll remind people to bug report it (which I assume you've done already).
