I logged off fpor a little while only to have a notification of an update for me. Now everytime I logf in it keeps reinstalling that same update and won't let me in.

Hmm you might go for the 'brute force' approach:
- De-install SL (through control panel - add/remove software)
- Manually delete the c:\program files\second life\ directory if it is still there
(while doing this, also check for old installs in different directories like preview / shiva / etc)
- Delete the cache in c:\documents and settings\<user name>\application data\secondlife
(this is a hidden directory, switch on "show hidden files" if you can't find it)
- Reboot the computer
- Redownload Second life install
- Setup and (hopefully) play again.
