I am a little curious, I have a system with an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro, a 2.4GHz Pentium 4, with 1 gb of ram, a 4 mbit ADSL connection, and my framerate is:
10.7 fps
what am I doing wrong?

Well it vary alot whats around you, but thats about it 10-15fps is pretty standard with av's and loads of things around.
I have about 25-30 fps, 6800gt, 4gig ram , fx-55,, but it can drop to 10-15 pretty easy with many AV's in same sim, SL is a hog since it renders ,caches constantly,
Dont compare SL to games that has everything already on your harddrives, SL has a enourmous amount of textures , and rendering compared to just about everything out there, wich constantly is streamed to you when you move about, seeing new sims, new avatars more load.

It's not strictly a "well, SL has to download everything" deal. SL's renderer has to deal with far more texture data and polygons than the average scene in say, Quake. To make matters worse, it's not terribly efficient at dealing with the huge amount of textures. It gets better every release, and the Lindens are learning from experience in the next-gen 2.0 renderer due out later this year, but 10 fps isn't terrible.
You can try turning off lighting or turn down your draw distance to get a pretty decent boost. Also, if you have FSAA or anisotropic filtering turned on, those will definitely eat up the CPU and GPU.
