I've checked the Wiki and looked for other folk's posts but haven't be able to really find help.

I have a seventeen inch PowerBook G4, 1 GHz with 1 GB of memory, and I have about 4 GB free on my hard drive.

I've been running SL with no problems for about six months. Sure it's been slow at times and I couldn't really play tag or anything like that, but I'd turned down my setting under advice and I'd been having a pretty good time of building and visiting places.

Recently though it's gotten super slow for me, I haven't been able to teleport, or when I do the world never shows up, things I build snap back to they were a few seconds ago.

I never paid attention to what it was doing before, but I've noticed now (since I'm looking for problems) that my packet loss bar in the upper right is almost always red and full, and when I put my mouse on it it give me back numbers any where from 6% to 800%!!!

I checked to see if it was my computer's network and I got 0% packet loss and good download ratings from broadband.org. I also tried it at work where I would have a great network (and wasn't on airport) but I had the same problems.

I checked the Wiki and added SL to my computer firewall, but it didn't really change anything. I also tried to find new drivers for my video card like it said but the NVIDIA website didn't have any GeForce4 MX drivers for the Mac.

I'm not sure what else to try and would love any advice or help!!! (^/\^)

I have also experienced the increased packet loss.

I think something got changed in the latest update.

It seems like every other update either speeds up or slows down SL.

I'm also using 17" Powerbook, 1.25 Ghz G4, 1GB RAM.

If you're using a wireless networking solution, try a wired connection instead, if only for testing purposes.

Thanks Lee... I tried that at work a few days ago and it seemed the same. I can try again later today just to make sure and write down the packet loss numbers I get. :-/

The best place to look for packet loss isn't the icon on the menubar, it's in Help > About Second Life. It's a cumulative average, rather than a measure of PL at a specific instance. There isn't a straightforward way to gauge PL over time, merely the average.

So I did like Catherine and Lee suggested, here's what happened:

Over the airport it says: Packets Lost: 279/1920 (14.5%)
When plugged in with a wire it's: Packets Lost: 1328/19879 (6.7%)

Then at work plugged in I got: Packets Lost: 249/4640 (5.4%)

Both times my red bar gets pretty full and it gets reeeeeally choppy. :-/ Though it does seem to be better than it was a few days ago... I'm wondeirng if I really need to have like 6 GB free on my hard drive or something 'cause that's the only thing other than teh SL updates that have changed I think...

Okay.. SL is better now.. here's what I did

1) Changed the network slider in prefs to really low... like 100. I don't really know what this does, but on the advice of a friend it really helped.
2) Gave it even more HD space! Now more than 10 GB free.
3) Turned down my horizon (um.. I think it's called sight distance) to 96.

Are these settings normal for other folks on powerbooks?

Most of the time playing the game is a smooth (or smoother than it ever was). Great!

But I still get full packet loss bar when flying around and sometimes for no reason things will just pause. Both things never used to happen before the holidays. Any other advice?

Thanks! ^_^

Interesting... lately I've been noticing my packet loss bar going sky-high, although it hasn't really been affecting my gameplay in any noticeable way. I'm pretty sure that the problem is not on my end. I built my home network from the ground up, and my router is custom-designed to fairly treat all data flows. I checked, and it's not reporting lost packets, so I'm pretty sure the problem is elsewhere down the line. I'm on a rock-solid speakeasy DSL connection (the fastest they offer), so I'm pretty sure that's not where the problem lies.

I think the problem may well have started since the last update, and I only noticed it recently. Did the ports SL uses change?

I'll try lowering my network speed settings in preferences and see if that helps.
