What are your normal settings? Also the only thing in SL I know of that can kill your local FPS like that is Local Lighting. If you have that on turn it off till 1.9.1 comes out.

are you running more then one avie? Many people are crabbing these days because they are running more then one avie on their system at one time.

With half the memory, an 8x AGP 6600 GT w/128 MB, and a 1.83 GHz sempron on a 3M/sec ADSL connection, I'm getting more like 10-15 FPS unless I'm in a laggy nightclub. This makes me wonder... what's your network connection like? Unless something's misconfigured, or you're running stuff in the background, it's hard to understand why your performance should be that poor with a fast net connection.
I even get passable frame rate on another sempron-based machine w/512 MB of memory and an antique ATI 9250 card, I just turn down the slower graphics options, and expect to watch things rez a while. But, again, fast net connection, no significant background tasks. |

First SL is not like say Quake. Since it is all user made here your performance from sim to sim can vary widely. It's best to first understand the settings options which this should help with.
For basic suggestions in the graphics tab uncheck all the options at the top, normal for avatar rendering and some for terrain. Then in advanced graphics move the three sliders to about the middle or below, distance to 64 or 96 then the others in that list to about 2, 5, 5, 2048 and 2. That gives you about low to average settings with no extra options on. From there go around various sims and make adjustments till you find what works well on your system. Typically the one option in the graphics tab most don't want to live without is the shiny objects one. It should also be noted you may need to go into your preferences now and then depending on the sim but that should largely deal with just the three sliders in the advanced graphics tab. |

It's best to first understand the settings options which this should help with. Absolutely. After reading this thread, I went onto SL with a 1.8 GHz sempron system, ATI 9250 video card (128 MB), and 512 MB of memory, just to see how bad a frame rate I could get in the most crowded dance clubs and strip joints on SL. I could get down to 6 FPS for a few seconds, but even in the worst places I was getting 8-12 over the long term, and in most areas it was more like 15-25. But I did not do it with graphics stuff set high, either, most parameters were set for performance over detail. I realized some time ago that setting particle count to 4096 was not going to add to my enjoyment of the game, quite the opposite. So I second your "RTFM" suggestion. |
