To Rez or not to Rez?

In most ways the 1.8 update seems to represent a huge improvement, particularly in performance. Movement is fluid, and the P2P teleport system is excellent... however :(

While most of the textures rez promptly, a significant number remain blurry. It's as if the client allows a certain window of opportunity for a texture to appear, but if it misses that opportunity then it gives up. What arrives, arrives real quick, the rest just get stuck in whatever part-rezzed state they happen to achieve.

This seems to apply in particular to skins and clothes. A guesitmate would be that I'm getting around 60% of these textures. Textures on other objects seem to fair a lot better at nearer 95%.

The SL client seems to have gone from being overly enthusiastic to being somewhat lethargic when it comes to downloading textures. It's as if the client isn't keeping track of what has, and has not, been downloaded properly. Instead it acts as if everything has arrived just fine when in fact lots of the textures have not completely downloaded.

So... are people seeing this as a general 1.8 phenomenon, or is it just me?

I haven't noticed it yet, but this is a perfect description of what was happening for me (and lot of people) throughout 1.7. Most likely they just havent fixed this yet (whatever it is). It may be related to the fact that a lot of people have a cache that doesn't cache also.

It's best to wait as much as a couple of days after an update to see if things improve (they sometimes do), and clear your local cache if you haven't already. So far for me things are about the same speed wise and all as 1.7, which is to say still slower than 1.6.
