Sorry to interrupt everyone's graphics difficulties....

With the amount of IT brainpower here in SL, I'm hoping someone can give me a name for the component in the attached picture. I need to order a new one and have spent an ungodly amount of time trying to figure out what it is called.

It is an internal PC component on the front side of the case and has two USB ports, a speaker port and a microphone port. The USB ports have gone to be with Jesus and it looks like I could just replace the whole component...if only I knew what it was called.....

Thanks :)

There isn't really a proper term for it. It's a proprietary component for that case so each manufacturer may have a different name for it. When you talk to their tech support, jsut call it the circuit board in the front of the case that has the front ports mounted on it. Really, the "TMT-USB-6" printed on the board should be the part number.

There were likely connectors between that 18-pin set, and the motherboard. Check to see if those connectors are installed properly and to the correct pins on the motherboard. Otherwise, you can find replacements at places like MicroCenter, Fry's, or maybe CompUSA... and on the internet at newegg.com. Try something like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813999356

However, those USB sockets generally don't fail... there's nothing electronic about them. So, if the replacement fails to function as well, the problem is likely on your motherboard. In that case, it might be a bios setting that has changed.

Excellent! Thank you both, you gave me enough to go on to find the case manufacturer and put in a request. The USB ports are both corroded (coffee spill may have had some thing to do with it) and the white pad is missing - looks like bent pins as well.

I'm refurbishing this for a friend who needs a computer but can't afford a new one...

Just to be sure you know, that's not an essential piece of the computer. It's more of a convienience item. Without it connected the computer will work just fine. You may already know this, but I just wanted to be sure you weren't wasting your time. :)

Depending on the price of the part and your budget, you might want to consider buying an entirely new chassis. They can be purchased for as little as $30-$40: a top of the line chassis goes for something in the $200 range. Psychologically, that small (relatively) investment can make the computer seem a lot more "new" than many other things you could buy.

Most chassis that I've bought have been from Antec: they always include basic front connectors and a set of motherboard installation parts (E.G.: offset screws and the like). Some include power supplies as well, although more and more the powersupply is treated as a seperate part.

And good for you, helping your friend out!
