I'm running an HP Pavilon a1140n with 1GB RAM, an Nvida GeForce FX 5500 with the latest driver, and a dual core 3.00 GHz Pentium 4 processor, I know someone with approximately the same set-up and in Luskwood (which usually has 10-20 AV's with many attatched objects) they get 5-7 FPS. With no AV's on the screen I get 14-15 FPS in an empty sim standing still in mouselook with EVERY detail down ALL the way, it drops to 4-5 with just one, simple, no clothing, every bar down all the way, smallest it can be AV (me) on the screen and in lusk I get 1, maybe 2 FPS if I'm lucky, is there anything that could be causing this? Does Windows really suck THAT bad? Does my computer just hate me? Find this and more on the next episode of SECOND. LIFE. PLEA!

Myoukitsune--and what a unique name that is--you seem mention you get much worse performance than someone else on a similar setup. Is that correct? If so, have you compared their Preferences and yours? There've been times where I saw that one person had their Detail sliders cranked all the way to the right when the other left them in the middle, or a great difference in Draw Distance.
And you've also made sure there are no other computer-intensive programs running while you also run SL, right? I'm going to move this to Technical Issues; please feel free to contact our Support for further assistance too. _____________________

Yes, we set everything the same, everything ALL the way down, I actually then cranked his all the way up and his still ran faster, the only difference is that his had an AMD processor and mine is an intel.
Also, please expound upon "Computer Intensive" |

computer intensive refers to most applications you could run, winamp with video, windows media player, more than one game at a time, multiple messengers,

Also, please expound upon "Computer Intensive" AMD vs Intel WILL make a difference assuming similar clock speeds. AMD run MUCH better than their comparably clocked Intel. Hence why AMD's are known as 3000+ etc. ( but only run at 1.8Ghz or more ) as they are comparable to at least a 3.0Ghz Intel.. ( or 3.2Ghz for a 3200+ etc.). |

More importantly, it makes a big difference whether or not you two are using similar settings, both in SL and in Windows.
I also had a system that got a dramatic performance increase simply by replacing the motherboard with a better one, so "sticker stats" aren't always everything about performance. |

I have also witnessed a peculiar behaviour lately. I have a machine with a 7900GTX, and my framerates get cut in *HALF* if I have the Avatar Vertex checkbox checked. Try unchecking it and see if that helps. I know the two cards are wildly different, but it is worth a shot.

your overlooking something. Your missing settings, or comparing your two computers wrong.
There is some difference you are not noticing, or you ruled out incorrectly. With the little info you gave, theres no way we can know for sure. |
