Hi .. i have a X800GTO 256mb ATI graphics card, i have read about problems to do with these cards in SL, because they don't support OpenGL as well as nvidia cards

This i presume causes, me to arrive at a scene in sl and for it to take 5 minutes to render around me, but i have a couple of other issues

number 1: my hdtv dosen't play .. ( i do have quicktime installed and streaming media enabled in the preferences)

Also when i arrive anywhere .. the music dosen't play, however if i reset my draw distance from say for example 96 down to 64 meters .. it will start playing and will continue to play until i teleport elsewhere

I wonder how many people with ATI graphics cards, just leave SL because of the poor performance ....... i wonder if its equal to the number of people who leave for other reasons ....

Something to think about ?????????????????????????

anyway .. if anyone has any ideas .. i am running the Omega graphics drivers for my ATI card by the way

thanks

5 minutes to rez isn't a graphics card issue - it is a texture download time issue, which could be bandwidth related

Likewise, no streaming video / audio sounds like it could be a bandwidth issue.

What is your internet connection speed?

What is your max bandwidth seeing in Preferences?

What is the packet loss reported (by Help->About)?

Your music problem is most likely bandwidth or memory issues. The only processing your ATI does is for video. If you can watch tv after turning down the draw distance, that's probably because the video card doesn't have enough buffering, rather than processing, capacity to handle both. Increased RAM may help if the card will use it.

I have one of each machines and have to admit that the nVidia far outperforms the ATI for fps; but the ATI is so pretty and nice and clean and bright! I use the nVidia to play in Windows or Linux and ATI to explore when I'm just looking at stuff.

I've not ever thought about leaving SL due to bad performance. My mindset has always been to find a way to compensate for it.

If you dont watch ingame SL video you dont really need more then 1mbit line , but you want to watch streaming video? then you better have least 10mbit+ (500kb/s+) or it will appear choppy.

Highest setting in SL right now is about 1mbit, just SL is being quite slow latly, alot of users now , remember a time we had a test couldnt get 3000 online ,now its 6-7000 constant :o

If you go into a sim where lots of people are you can notice its way slower to rez cause of a sim appears to have a shared upload to user speed (always wondered about this) capped at a certain speed (?) , so rezzing will be slower then if you where in a sim with few.

You can check in debug sometimes it will report your actual download speed > xxx.xx < it changes your download speed according to how many are in sim or load apperantly.

a must for SL now is ;2 gig ram, without youll suffer, started to notice 256mb ram video card getting full to in certain sims it fills up about 211 to vid ram . :D yay.

quicktime been a odditiy for me to, had to install it twice for some reason it didnt want to work with SL first install, second (after yet another restart , make that twice) install worked.

Surely 2GB of RAM is a bit excessive, the system requirements here

http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php

mind you i do know someone in the game with a 1 terrabyte HDD, 4gb of ram, 2 x crossfire graphics cards etc

my full spec is:

Amd 64 3200 processor
1gb of corsair ram
256mb x800 graphics
200gb hdd

maybe i will upgrade my ram and see what happens

I have the X850, and I am fine in SL. And with newest version can turn on AGP without hacking SL. :)

But the texture load time is probally your internet as someone else here said, not your video card.

And for your video not playing, is it group land, is the tv deeded? I would blame that again long before your video card, or uninstall of quicktime then re-install (must uninstall, reinstall over top does not do much to fix problems).
