So we are getting voice - what an excellent step! But now, how about peer to peer file sharing?

This would be another great step forward for online meetings and collaboration...

any thoughts?

I think it's a great idea. The problem is that the amount of bandwidth consumed by streaming media and the zillions of UDP packets flying back and forth between the viewer and the region server makes adding any "reliable" transports, such as TCP, a difficult task because having too many TCP connections open at a time will crush the protocol stack of the OS and really make the entire game run much slower.

You'd have to have a pretty big pipe and a quick box to keep it from affecting your second life experience. I still think it's a great idea and worth investigating.

Since I'm no network/computer geek my input may be impossible or even irrelevant but here it is.

I fully understand the huge bandwidth required for P to P. So why not dedicate a set of server specifically for that purpose? Not the same servers that operate the grid or sims but an entirely different group with it's own set of pipelines. We are constantly being handed off to different servers when we TP so I don't see much difference in a method like what I'm thinking about.

Perhaps making that a service available at a nominal additional use fee.........even a "premium" benefit.

Just an idea. :)

I was referring to YOUR bandwidth, not Linden Labs'. :-)
