Haven't seen anything on the forums regarding this subject and I am sure I am not the only one that has had this happen. Even live help doesn't know the answer...
Problem:Items that are not named particles which you drop from your inventory, then delete, but the particles are still there, then you can't get rid of them except to hide them which hides everything else, like your water fountains water, etc.
You can no longer find the source once you delete the whatever it was you dropped, does anyone out there know how to get rid of them???
It would sure be nice if it is a particle that it be named that to so you don't screw up like this.
Any suggestions of how to get rid of them would be greatly appreciated.....

Hi Foxy,

Do you mean you want to turn off particles in an item that's putting them out? By calling llParticleSystem() with no parameters, it can be done.

Just copy this script into the item you want to turn off (make sure that there aren't any particle producing scripts in the item):
CODE

default
{
state_entry()
{
llParticleSystem([]);
}
}

Hope this helps.

It sounds like the problem Foxy is describing is: Particles from nowhere, and the original source object is gone!

Is that what you're saying Foxy?

Can you give a location for one of these "ghost particle sources"?

Yes, the original source object was gone, but when I tore up my land to rebuild I finally found the source and was able to delete it, thankyou very much for responding as I thought the source was completely gone.

I assume from this that the particle emitter was a hidden prim, bundled with but not linked to, the visible portion of the object. When you deleted the visible portion, the emitter prim was left beind.

For anyone having this problem in the future - try switching on the debug menu (ctrl-alt D) and then show transparent (ctrl-alt T) to find the hidden bits. Hit ctrl-alt T again to return to normal.

For builders - obviously if you can, link your objects properly - but if you must have them seperate (adding particles to a no-mod object, for eaxmple), pleeeeez follow Foxy's suggestions and name your emitter approriately.

edit: or is it ctrl-shift-alt D for debug?

There's also the View->Beacons->Particle sources menu item that will give all objects that emit particles a small beacon so that you can find it.
