SL works with Vista most of the time. If you have ATI, then you should have v. 7.4 of the Catalyst drivers. With NVIDIA, make sure you have the latest.
If it still doesn't work and you have ATI, then take a look at the extremely long ATI and Vista thread that is in this forum.

Vista is not compatible... well no thats not true.. its just Vista is not supported by LL, that in turn does NOT mean it wont work... it may, it may have problems, it may not..... who knows, just try... it just means Linden labs will not support it, so if you have problems, they'll say too bad... we don't support that.

Vista works but very poor performance

I use Vista anhd ATI 1950 pro card and 7.4 driver. BUT NO. SL have about half the framerate as the same machine with XP. When you get in to a heavy texture enviroment SL just stops and starts to access the disc. Framerate like 1 every 15-20 secs. This does not happen in XP. So as long you find your self on a low prim island with no avatars its ok. Not much fun in that.

I am just wondering: how much RAM do you have? What you describe sounds like you are running out of free RAM and your computer is resorting to virtual memory.

Haha, when I saw this thread on the forum I had to just laugh. The title of this thread says it all. One word, VISTA, and a very angry face next to it. Haha, doesn't that sum up the entire Vista experience?

I feel a swell of pitty for anyone who wants to play games on Vista. ^^;

Vista's revenge

The BBC reported today that 40 million copies of Vista have been sold. That means that millions of potential users are going to see "not compatible with Vista" and give Second Life a pass. When is Linden Labs going to wake up and stop blowing off us Vista users with an obviously untrue "patch is coming." Compatibility with the new standard in operating systems is far more important than Voice.

Its just drivers issue , any decent gforce has no issues with Vista / SL , its just Ati's own fault they where so slow with putting out decent opengl drivers.

Just dont expect old vid card to be any use in vista, dont come with a gforce5200 le and expect that with vista for exsample -.-

Beta'd vista ~ release and with nvidia i didnt have much issues with SL, Ati where waay to slow with opengl drivers, expect end of year before both nvidia/ati opengl for vista is out of "beta" tho.

Youll be forced to eventually cause of games that use dx10, unless that wrapper for dx10+winxp ever will surface or flop, then it will just doom Vista , wich i wouldnt mind ; p

I am running Vista with a 8600GTS and it runs rather well. I do get a few more FPS in XP though but it's not enough to make a difference really. I expect it to improve over time as Nvidia has stated they are still refining the Vista drivers.

3rd party video companies are having a tough time with Vista because MS changed their list of features they were going to have so often no one could really plan ahead. At one time MS was going to drop OpenGL support for example so I imagine companies were reluctant to spend money to support features that Vista may or may or may not have until Vista actually shipped.

ATI has always had problems with OpenGL and would love nothing better that to see it go away. Games like Doom3 and SL make it impossible though.

Vista itself is a perfectly fine OS. Its a ram hog of epic proportions but other than that its pretty solid. But as mentioned before, the entire experience boils down to drivers. Both companies can't make a good driver to save their lives. ATI's driver is stable, but slow. Where nVidia's you have to hack the damn thing to get it installed half the time (since their drivers are so bad MS wont certify them.) then 9x out of 10 they crash when you try to do anything 3d intensive.

Though the one person with no problems, its obvious why that is, you have a 8xxx series card. The ONLY series of video cards that have been developed with sound drivers for Vista. Being that its one of the few DX10 cards on the market it has been the only cards that have had attention from nVidia. All the people that have the 7900 or the 7950 are pretty much left to sit and spin. Which is why I have always hated nVidia... -_-;;;

And yes... SL runs at about 1/4th the speed on Vista for me. With a Core2 proc, 2gig of ram, and a 7900 I shouldn't run as slow as I do under vista... Considering I can crank everything to max on 1900 resolution under XP and get close to 60fps+

"hack the damn thing to get it installed"

errr no?, just install them and click yes? nvidia never needed a hack to install drivers for Vista, if it where any that would be ati , since they didnt even have a opengl till months after release.

Ive run 6800,7900, 7950, 8800 on Vista and didnt have any issues with SL + Vista , well other then its completly nonsense ram hog : P

This pc with 8800 320mb + 4gig ram , boot vista 1750mb gone, (vs a 150mb in win xp) 750mb ram used to "help" vid card to cache all the thumbnails and glowy shiney useless things O_o or whatever it does with it ,thats a clean win vista install with the glory ugly aero thats about 10 years behind already -.-, Start SL uhm... 2500mb ram use easy, yeh its way slower then xp to : p but windows always been utter slow at start, till tons of updates.

My brother has a similar pc but i had to revert back to xp, since its no point in using vista (gamer) till they actually use dx10 on something you can play -.- wich is the sole reason ill ever forced to use it.

I acquired vista recently so I could run poser6, or expecting it to run better, first time I've used windows in 6 years or so. I have NV 6700 card.
Poser runs in linux with wine ok but wont even install in vista.
SL client runs, but slower and like the man said it's a ram HOG. 450mb just idling whereas linux uses 120mb or less just idling even with the fancy 3d desktop.

Lucky I got it cheap but it seems its pretty useless to me. I ran it two days ago to show somebody else but could not get out quick enough and go back to something much quicker and snappier with all the software I should ever need.
Do yourself a favor. Download a Kubuntu feisty cd and whack that in to get a look at it. (No, you won't need to upgrade any hardware either. It'll work on any old thing.) Get a 2nd harddrive and install it.. you will never look back! And won't have to BUY software ever again. Unless of course you play WOW, but that will have a Linux client soon too, I believe.

People: Vista is like a new car that won't run on our existing roads.
MS: That's ok, we will make you build a new road network so you can drive our new car.

Same here! Just waiting for more games to come out with the "Made for Vista" logo. Till then.... XP Pro all the way!

Seeing whats coming down the pike for Games, I really really REALLY hope they get Vista working with stuff the way it should!

The games coming out to take advantage of DX10? WOW! And if they pull off the PC & Xbox360 Gaming Union? Double WOW!
