Just thought I'd let you know, the 7.3 Beta Catalyst Drivers/Control Centre has been released on Guru3D.com, however, they will not make SL run, no matter what you do. At least it doesnt work for me no matter what I do. If the beta drivers are any sign of what's to come, those of us on Vista with ATI cards are going to be screwed for yet another long period of time.

Vista is currently UNSUPPORTED, like with most applications. It's too early for now to switch to vista.

I dont know about you guys. But I seem to be the only one on this planet that is not haveing any problems with vista... It does not lock up, almost every single application works if you just find the drivers online. (they do exsist)

If thoes drivers are beta, then of course it's not gonna run Second Life... I am shure they are still working on the source on the problem, so just wait.... dont rush something that we all know is not gonna be 100%.

specs - Laptop

Manufacturer: Gateway
Processor: AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-52 (2 CPUs), ~1.6GHz
Memory: 1918MB RAM
Hard Drive: 152 GB
Video Card: ATI Radeon Xpress Series
Monitor: Generic PnP Monitor
Sound Card: Speakers (High Definition Audio Device)
Speakers/Headphones: Logitech
Keyboard: USB Root Hub
Mouse: USB Root Hub
Mouse Surface: Some pad thingy
Operating System: Windows Vista™ Home Premium

again, i have zero problems with vista.

However until Microsoft manage to "drag" the whole industry into vista, we will have problems for stuffs that are very tied to the hardware (3D especially) all i have to say is that it's MS's damn arrogance to want to change everything they have set up and expect the world to follow them.

Whoever says Vista has poor program support needs to seriously check themselves. There are only 2 types of programs that Vista WILL NOT RUN, which is SL and GameGuard.

Audio
  1. MTV Music Generator. Dumps the program any time you try to do anything "memory-intensive," like load saved files or generate video.
  2. Philips Sound Agent 2 - Can't install, driver of device isn't compatible.
  3. Steinberg Cobase SX3 and Nuendo 3 - after installing and rebooting the system does not let to use the phantom USB drive, whitch causes the total fall of the program start
  4. Total Recorder 6.0 Some people reported severe issues with mmsys.cpl after installing
Backup
  1. Farstone RestoreIT Pro 7.0
  2. Paragon Drive Backup 6.0 (32-bit)

  6. Slysoft CloneDVD v2.9.0.1 (64-bit) - it installs but at the end it says that it's trying to install an unsigned driver. Program won't start and it uninstalls my dvd-rom drive and my virtual drives. They won't reinstall until Clonedvd is uninstalled.
  7. WinISO v5.3.0.125
Developer Tools
  1. Jimi Schopp's Copy to Filename to Clipboard shell extension -- does not install (64-bit) NOTE: As a replacement, press shift and right-click on an object to bring up the 'improved' context menu with the 'Copy to Path' option on it

  3. Ziff-Davis PC Magazine Utilities COA2 (Change of Address) -- installs but does not run

File Recovery
  1. Lexar Image Rescue version <= 2.0.05 - Program won't install no matter what compatibility settings are used. Lexar support is aware of it and will provide an update. As they have not been posting the most up to date versions on the web site, you will have to contact support directly.

  8. WatchGuard System Monitor 8.3 (Policy Manager won't start because installer can't create folders under Documents and Settings, which are required for firewall config files - as a work around, install Windows XP in a virtual machine in Vista and run WSM inside that to give yourself the same effect)

  5. The wads for Doom in "Doomworld -- The Top 100 WADs Of All Time" played with Doomsday 3D Engine 1.9.0 Beta IV --- a lot of wads that was tried and could be played under XP cannot start with Doomsday. An error message about segmentation appears, or when the special episode of wad is selected, an error message about loading levels or graphic-sound etc add-ons appears. The game crashes.
  6. Gametap -- Doesn't run in Vista. Gametap is working on an update.

download your latest drivers for your VidCard, make sure the OS has vista selected when downloading, and HW2 works smoothly.....Still having random crashes with mods tho... =(

  4. Midnight Club II - Runs, but then crashes to desktop on load.
  5. Railroad Tycoon 3 with v1.05 patch and Coast to Coast Expansion - crashes as soon as the main menu loads with no explanation. I've tried all compatibility modes with no success; I've tried RT3's batch files that load its safe modes/windowed/no sound modes without success. Intro video plays but that's it. On Vista 64-bit, AMD Athlon X2 4200+, GeForce 7600GT.
  6. Second Life (32-bit) -- Doesnt recognize video card, attempts to start anyway & fails. Depends on video card, works fine with GeForce 7600GT. Works with GeForce 8800 GTS/Geforce FX 5200 (with nvidia drivers)

  9. Silkroad Online (32-bit) -- Dont work.
  10. Storm Angel (the game crashes in a few seconds after started)
  11. Trackmania Nations -- the game never starts or sometimes starts too lately as we cannot wait/be patient. The game seems to be unable to detect the video card on one system tested (nVidia 7600GS, Vista Business 32-bit).
    1. Workaround -- see Has problems, but they can be solved / minor unsolved section

  12. Fahrenheit - The installer starts but keeps saying that installation has been cancelled. The game itself does work if previously installed under XP and run from Vista.
  13. Sacred(Any Edition)(32-bit) - Installs fine, but when you go to play the game it crashes and says it cant run in a x64 or server environment. No news on if there will be a fix for it.
  14. Rise of Nations (the first game) - Its able to install but not to run , i have everytime the problem with Securom and no original disc can be found (With 3 different originaldiscs), i havent find a way to run , no cracks and and and , correct me if im wrong
    1. Works great on my rig (AMD Athlon X2 4200+, GeForce 7600GT) on Vista 64-bit. Minor flickering icons in Conquer the World campaign, but doesn't affect gameplay, and probably an artifact of my video card, not the OS.

That's funny.

I loaded them up and SL fired right up for me. (1.14.0)

Vista's video DID go into basic mode instead of the enhanced mode (Vista Home Premium), but I'll take that trade off for SL to work. In fact, I believe the system performs better in basic video mode vs. enhanced.

Your mileage may vary. And, I wouldn't load beta versions of any driver unless you know what you're doing.

I happen to use Cubase SX3 / Cubase 4 daily for my work. None of the hardware I use for music production and recording is yet supported in Vista so I'm in no hurry to move onto the Vista platform. Until I get confirmation from Steinberg and Marian (audio card manufacturer) that Vista is 100% supported then I'm not even wasting my time thinking about it.

Hmmm...

A Friend of mine said her computer caught on fire. She had to go back to her old system until her new one was shipped back. Eeps, I just forked out money for a new system. Trying to make it a mean machine with all the latest drivers and such so that I dont have to update or have any troubles for a few years. Unfortunatly the day after i purchased the system I found out that SL doesnt support Vista.

I was really upset so I hope these drivers work for me. I'm really upset that when you go to buy a new computer you can't ask if they will do it with XP. It's only vista... so some people don't have a choice. If you're like me and only know the smallest bits of comptuers. You're shit out of luck. People told me to unistall drivers then do this or just switch to XP. It's a big time inncovince. Really sucks. So I really hope everything works out for me and the other suckers who purchased Vista. I've been looking at reviews, probably [estamating here] 4 out of 10 reveiws said Vista was good. :S

Mostly they have managed to create a successful business, much to the consternation of fanbois that simply cannot spell Microsoft without dollar signs.

ms for whatever it is has always had issues with major windows changes

3.11 (16 bit) -> 95 (32 bit)
9X -> 2000 (winnt without NT only stuff)
and now NT -> Vista

there comes a time where the old systems just become too old to be usefull, wether thats user demand (as in win 2000 & XP) or major hardware differences (as in 3.11/dos to windows 95, or even 98 to 2000/XP) with the advent of dual core 64 bit systems, and even less need for any dos support vista is just the next step (altho its sorta like XP more pretty, less guts)

its just the nature of the game

apple did it
nix did it
and now tis just Windows turn, give it 6 months and youll probally be lauging at XP users for being outdated

Vista

I know the technical requirements say: "Second Life does NOT currently support Windows Vista," but I've been running Vista for three weeks now without any problems at all. If anything, the game loads faster than with XP. I had some initial problems, mainly incompatibility and inept Dell technicians, but after downloading new drivers and sorting through compatibility issues, Vista has worked fine. It's a much better operating system than XP. It's faster and certainly more attractive visually, and when all the whining is done, it will become the new standard and Vista users will outnumber all others. SL is being very short-sighted and a bit silly in not supporting Vista. Since new PCs come preloaded with Vista, SL is scaring off anyone who has purchased a computer since February 1.

Ok I downloaded the 7.3 drivers thinking everything would be fixed and perfect, I installed them and SL ran fine, I played it without problem for a few hours...

But now I can not stay logged in for more than 5 seconds before it crashes, and I have been trying to get in to make a payment for a rental that just expired. This is not suiting me at all.

It appears the stability for the drivers isn't very stable and just temporary, the problems are not over as everyone seems to think which makes things even worse.

You actually think Vista is a better OS than XP? I have my own computer repair business and I can personally tell you it isn't. Many drivers are no longer supported, most hardware that is still qualified as nonobsolete does not function and is absolutely terrible with crash recovery. I don't know what you've been smoking man but i want some.
