Have you heard? I bet this new processor will really make SL come to life. Sorry if this is a bit loose ontopic, but I just thought you might like to know. Read this link, it's AMAZING! I heard Intel claims the top performing CPU will be about $300!

Eh, it's always this CPU or that CPU. Throwing brute force at an inefficient renderer isn't much good...

Brute force

Brute force is what it takes to run SL. I'm sure a newer faster processor will increase performance by at least 10% if not more. Personally I'm far more interested in what AMD's got than Intel's next round of chips will be. AMD's processors exceed Intel's best for in game performance, the integrated memory controller speeds memory access while saving power, and their 64bit dual core chips definately have it right. Intel over the next 12-24 months will have to work very hard at optimizing the processors they have to maintain performance parity with AMD. About 18 months out when Intel actually has had more than a processor generation to address AMD's architectural lead is when the current situation will change and we'll see the introduction of new processor technology.

Personally I think most SL computer clients could see a sizeable jump in framerate if the processor power behind the server were increased. I've seen framerates in the 70's to 90's in sims with high prim count but few to no scripts, and in similar sims with similar prim count's I've seen them 15-30's. I don't know what the current servers behind SL are, but I'd like to see 2 way AMD systems with dual core 64 bit processors. I think that would provide a generous amount of room for more people, prims and scripts in a sim as well as future server software upgrades.

I just bought a X2 4400+ today, these new chips better be like over a grand so I can justify my purchase lol.

Did you read the link?! This new chip beats the top AMD chip by at least 20% on EVERY benchmark! I've always been an AMD man (never owned an Intel), but this latest news is turning the industry on it head. The link shows nice graphics with simple to read benchmarks and the reviewer is truly non-biased.

As for the brute force/speed comment, whatever. I'm eager for a dual core chip so that I can multitask while running SL. If you haven't noticed, SL is a major resource hog and having two cores will allow me to run Photoshop (or whatever) while working within SL, and with this new chip hittin' the streets in a few months, dual core AND speed will be affordable.

Athlon 64 FX-60 overclocked to 2.8GHz running on a DFI RD480 motherboard. And in the other corner, a Conroe running at 2.66GHz (1067MHz FSB) on an Intel 975X motherboard.

it the Conroe only duel/quad core?

Quad-core 65nm Kentsfield, dual core 65nm Conroe

I dont see a single core proc listed? So they put dual or quad against a single core?

also:

Intel setup two identical systems

the reviewer just looked at the numbers intell provided, and we all know intell has never cooked the numbers.

The FX-60 is a dual core, first of the FX series to be a dual.
