I say we need a new asset server
but for tomorrow, fixing the problems is going to be enough

Anyway, how long as the old asset server been in place?

My guess is, at the way its been, it probably has been there since its gone live. Which is over a year now of many major patches. A new one I think is definately needed.

the current asshat server is more of a liability than an asset, we'll see after the patch on the 22nd how it goes... wonder if they are still running it on a 2.26ghz server?

there's got to be some of that 8m floating around, unless the investors specifically said that none of it was going to go to hardware upgrades, in which case, we know who wears the hat of ass.

The asset server appears to make a huge difference in border crossing. I noticed my vehicle could go between certain sims in preview and I wouldn't even notice it. At all.

I am thinking they ought to use a really beefy machine, preferably something that looks big and evil and runs on three-phase. :)

I used to work at a large national ISP and our registration servers were like that. Sun Starfire E10Ks, two of them. I don't know if they actually ran on three-phase, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I wonder.. They made SL scaleable by using sims, but all the sims rely on one asset server? Seems they need a whole different strategy not just throwing better hardware at it, shugs.. maybe they add more asset servers and use data replication..

In any case I agree.. It needs fixed and hopefully we wont get back into such a state.
Good luck to the lindens :)

Actually, the asset server DOES distrobute over the sims, however every time a sim reboots, it need to redownload it's portion from the asset server. So, in the case of today, when the asset server fell over - it was because there were 510 sims mirroing portions of it.

Ok.. so. there's possibly a new way to streamline AND get a new machine.. Maybe I'm asking too much here?

Well considering how LL stated they are going to update the asset server. It's kind of an odd thing to poll.

Update could mean anything, doesn't mean they'll actually replace it with a new one not that we know of. So updating could just be a patch of some sort, but it won't fix the bottleneck workloads.

Wait, haven't they ALREADY replaced the asset server at least once this year?

From what the linden grapevine tells me, they are replacing the hardware.

I find it somewhat interesting that people are running forward to say that the Asset server is inadequate and should be replaced, etc., with little to no actual data to really back it up. We don't really have any way of knowing what sort of loads the asset server experiences. Einsman, you even use the word "guess," Evil, you "say," but you don't say why. Huns, that is an interesting point regarding the preview grid, but there are a lot of other things that could be happening that are not related to the main grid asset server...

Maybe it would be better to talk about asset-related lag problems without deciding in a vacuum what is causing them?

Chromal is right... to a point. Cory has mentioned that border crossing issues are related to data structures and the asset server, and that these are being worked on. His comments are here: /3/93/29014/1.html

I will agree that there are a lot of people guessing at a lot of things...

By the way, I am not actually suggesting LL buy a multimillion dollar enterprise server from Sun to handle serving assets... it was a bit hyperbolic of me to mention that :)

i voted yes with the qualification that "new" means new code. they've upgraded the hardware considerably and it's only gotten worse. the problem is in the design.
