Hello
I recently heard about second life and wanted to see what it was about however I have been having a very hard time of even being able to log into the viewer client. The first time that I downloaded and installed the Viewer it crashed twice then on the third attempt of logging in I was able to log in and spend a few minutes doing the tutorial then then logged out and have never been able to log back in since then. Each time I try to open the client it crashes. I have done expansive troubleshooting to resolve the issue but have had no luck so far. Listed below is what I have done.

Cleared cache
removed and reinstalled
updated video drivers
removed all settings files and cache
rebooted several times
ran dxdiag - NTF
reinstalled after defragging hard drive
installed latest java packages
searched registry and removed all keys for SL before reinstalling

Steps I have not done
restored windows to previous restore point
re-installed windows

I would like to refrain from re installing windows if at all possible

Any suggestions ?

Instant crashing when trying to start SL usually comes down to incompitable video card, wich on do you have?

ONLY nvidia & ati will run SL.

Intel can in rare cases, but dont count it will work very long.

Well the list of cards looked like it would work with mine though not sure. I will post my system specs below

Windows Xp pro w/ sp2
intell P4 3Ghz single core processor
1GB DDR ram
Geforce 6800 Ultra with 256mb Ram.
Asus p5gdc Motherboard
Onboard lancard and onboard audio

Typicaly this runs Games that require more horsepower than SL so not sure as to why its doing it, Though I have been digging into the logs and nothing realy pops out as to the culprit.

Hi,

I had similar problems with my P4 machine, while my laptop ran SL fine. The only real difference was the laptop had 2 GB RAM, while the desktop had 1 GB. So I decided to add another GB to the desktop, and voila, SL runs perfectly....no more crashing.

2 gig ram is abselute minimum for SL now,
if you have less then that it will start using swap file alot, wich can lead to crashing, there is a huge diffrence having 1 gig vs 2 in SL, i wouldnt go lower then 4gig myself.

no SL beat them ,games are static never changing.

SL is way more render heavy, and has millions more textures, avatars that can have more side/poly then entire map in a game.

Hi,

This helped me so I am going to throw it out....I have nVidia 6600 geforce, 1 gig, blah, blah, blah. Initially crashing like mad. Diabled Open GL Vertex Buffers in prefrences...life is good now. Also had a little problem with sticking avatar, rectified this with a chillpad (I have a gaming laptop). nVidia cards heat up quickly and cause a lot of quirky little problems. Speedfan.com, works well on PC's. Good luck!!
