My monitor recently crapped out, so I replaced it with one as old, if not older. When I opened the log-in screen of SL, it was all jumbled, and I was unable to see anything. The CPU and video card are the same, only the monitor has changed. Any thoughts on how to fix this so I can play?

What kind of monitor are you now using? Do you run SL full-screen? It sounds like SL may be trying to switch to a resolution higher than your monitor supports. You can check your desktop resolution in Windows by right-clicking on your desktop background, selecting "Properties", then "Settings". The numbers we're looking for are under "Screen Resolution". What are they set to? What is the highest setting you can set it to without your monitor going crazy? When running SL, (Assuming you run it full-screen) try pressing Alt-Enter to cause SL to be run in a window. Do the problems go away when you do that? If so, it's because SL is trying to run in a mode that your "new" monitor doesn't support. Once it's running in a window, you can reset SL to run in a mode your monitor can support. To do so, select "Preferences" at the login screen, then on the "Graphics" tab, deselect "Run in a window" and select a resolution from the dropdown list that's less than or equal to the highest mode your monitor supports. If it doesn't go away when you run SL in a window, then that means you have a rendering problem, which is probably related in some way to your video card. How did your previous monitor die on you? Dropped it down a flight of stairs? Power surge? Just got darker and darker?
