From: Cory Linden One additional comment on simulator performance is that we will, over time, be shifting the slowest sims to run void spaces, development grids and preview. As I mentioned in the town hall, after we get the code in place to allow us to bin simulator performance, we'll look at moving sims around. As Robin said, this is basically a function of the useful life of a sim, but since we currently somewhat short on sims for preview and other testing/development work, we are likely to accelerate the move for some of them. Cory, Is it possible to make considerations for older sims that are quite active with events and *ahem* have recently made the Top Picks list ??? *hint* Epimetheus

.. Well hmm.. I believe the lindens have already found the fairest way assign servers. We all want the fastest server(My sim certainly wont get one), but I hope just the people who are the squeaky wheels don't get all the (good) grease.
Also one interesting thing now is the effect it will have on land value. Since we will know once and for all what our sim performance will be. (ps, would'nt it be annoying in the kiddie grid got all new servers, lol)

Call me cynical, but one of the luskies and myself came to the conclusion that this is the best way for LL to "get back" at those who have complained about server performance all this time. Seeing most of those who complain would appear to be on the older sims.
We can easily see Lusk being given no more than say sim20 under this plan, where the simfps will be 150, without anyone being in the sim.
But then I am rather cynical.
LL, I'd be considering using some of that nice venture capital NOW to by a stack of hardware, and do a hardware upgrade that will cascade down through the sims, so the first 10 or 20 sims get pulled out of general circulation.

I like the idea, even if I'm probably going to get a class 1 or 2 sim.

I think this is incredibly unfair, and kind of a slap in the face to people who've stayed on their land for more than a year. We've already had plenty of time with crappy hardware since we were there when the sims were new. By that metric, long time land owners in the older sims have been burdened by poor sim permformance far more than anyone else. Now being told that we're going to be given the worst hardware permanently until it's retired (and if we don't like it, move) is insulting.

Honestly, this IS the best and most fair way of dealing with the problem. I like the idea, even if I'm probably going to get a class 1 or 2 sim. actually no the best and most fair way of dealing with the problem is to just hard lock sims back to machines, and then when that machine is obsolete, each sim would get re-set with a nice new one. That way *EVERYONE* would spend about equal time with new hardware, average hardware, and old hardware. (an alternative would be allow the current lotto system, but remember which hardware box each simulator was launched on, when that hardware box was retired, the sim it had launched with would be 'promoted' to the top lotto tier, as if it was a brand new sim again.

Try reading Phillips post and being in MY position. My sim preformance isnt bad, but the dwell has been broken for months on end. They fix it and 2 or 3 days later its broke again. We did a test a few Sundays back, where we kept an average of 12 people in the club for 13 hours, at the end of the 13 hours we had our usual Sunday night party with 30+ people for over 2 hours. The dwell was 485. Sweet deal aye ? I dont think Ill be seeing many rewards for dwell.

If you're having a lot of trouble with loading lag, the best thing to do is lower your draw distance. I keep mine on 92 most of the time. Local lighting and shadows can add a lot of viewer lag so you might want to turn those off. Take all your graphics settings down to minimum and edge them back up until you find a happy medium.
As for getting booted, well... your frustration is understandable, but the comment wasn't justified... and isn't ever justified. Have some class man.

Thank you Chip for your observation I am fully Aware of the Settings you are talking about and started with a Drop Draw distance of 64m & over the span off the last 36 hours Have experimented with about Every Variation that I can concieve which has led me to leave comments such as the previous ones.& I am a rather persistent fellow who would have tried somewhat more than most and I aim not to be derogative I Just Want to be informed. You're welcome Another thing you might want to check is how much space is available on your hard drive. If you don't have enough room for your cache it can really drag you down. Hope you're able to get it sorted and start having some fun!

Well, I guess LL have finally killed Mochastyle. There's no way a mall is going to be able to run on such old hardware.
I feel cheated by LL right now, having been in Mocha for 13 months, only to be told this crap!

I read John Rawls' A Theory of Justice too long ago to remember correctly, but think that the problem being faced in sim allocation is fundamentally insoluble. But there might be a Nobel prize waiting for the one who can solve it

To be honest, the random method is the only fair one. Otherwise, someone is going to be favoured. At least in the random system, the pain is shared around.

The only fair system is to IMMEDIATELY upgrade all servers to the best type available, and use the old hardware for void sims (which we need more of!) and development sims/grids. Give the 2nd best sims to the teen grid.

Hey genius, it was my RL fiancee you called that term. Let's just say I'm unpleased. She was clearly trying to HELP you on an Live Help call. Was she supposed to know your computer configuration telepathically? Show me where any "amusing" comments were made. I'm the wise-ass, not her, that's for sure. Its a standard practice to run through these types of questions to determine where the problem lies. Also, you asked how to connect to a faster server. SL has basically "one server" as you're thinking about it - the entire grid. Each square you see on the map is an individual server known as a simulator connected through this grid. Some simulator servers are better than others. So to get to another server, you don't "connect"... you teleport of fly to another "square" on the map. Your comment was way out of line, nonetheless, and I believe a full apology is on order. Calling someone trying to HELP YOU that is WAY out of line. Regards, -Flip

I was in the Live Help call and after few basic responses in which myself and one other person were trying to find the root of your "please direct me to a fast server" "this game wont load for shit" question -- you decided to refer to us as a"smart C**T" for no reason at all without fully explaining what the exact problem was and why it was occuring WE ARE NOT MIND READERS AND WE ARE VOLUNTEERING OUR TIME TO HELP OTHER SL RESIDENTS OUT. Many people IM live help with a variety of sim performance and technical issues. Sometimes it takes a few questions to get to the root of the problem or to advise of a solution To be called a "smart cunt" is rude, undeserving and quite frankly you got what you deserved. We are here to help not to be abused. Learn some manners.

I Only want to enjoy SL with the rest of its residents I am Not an Obnoxious Person But nobody Likes Being Laughed at ESpescially By The Uninformed Here are some helpful things you should know about Live Help before you assume that we are uninformed. 1. We are not mindreaders. Some problems warrant further descriptions. We get numerous IMs from people having various hardware technical problems, lag issues and sim performance. There have been alot of reports due to the recent problems with the asset server. One of the more common problems in slow load time in SL is graphics card capabilities. We have to ask questions to narrow down the specifics of any general problem. 2. We are SL residents like everyone else we do not have special Linden powers. Some of us may have technical/computer related backgrounds, but not all of us do. We are trying to lend a hand where it is needed. 3. We volunteer our time to help out SL residents as best as we can. We don't get paid for our services either. Keep in mind we each have a different range of SL knowledge. Together we make up a team of builders, scripters, designers etc. We are all knowledgeable in various aspects of SL. And if we don't know an answer to a question we try to guide the caller to the right place whether it be contacting the support line directly at Linden Labs, having them contact a Linde, or referring them to what they are looking for on the website. 4. We get numerous calls per day sometimes a dozen at one time and spend as much time as we can answering questions and helping people out. Why do we do this? To make SL a better place.... To share our knowledge bases with new and established players... Because we like to help people. We do not deserve to be verbally abused if you are not satisfied with our response. 5. I'm sorry you felt like you were being mocked or laughed at. It was not the case. 6. Calling those of us who are here to help "cunts" makes you come across as being obnoxious as far as I am concerned.

I hope that an abuse report was filed.
As the Linden't keep telling us, we don't have to put up with this kind of behaviour.
