Is this not responding or waiting?

Hi ^_^
I am having a small problem with SL. When I try to log in, I get to the preperaing inventory loading, and then my game just seems to stop. Unlike when the bar is actually loading it seems it doesn't change color. When I hit ctrl+alt+delete, it says SL is not repsonding. Is this how the load que usually works, or is there something wrong? Any helpful responces welcome.

Usually, that's the queue. Basically, everyone has to get in line to log in.
That said, I've not waited anything longer than about 10 seconds ever since the update, and others have reported waiting 45 minutes or more without anything ever happening, so I don't believe a bit of this "queue" stuff. I'm sure that they intended for a queue to exist, but I don't think it's working.

Lol ok I have just been worried because like 2 times earlier I got a like please contact so and so at second life blah blah include bla blah lol. (Did that make ANY sence) Anyways it is good to know it is normal *goes to start up SL*
[EDIT] Oh I forgot to say it wouldn't let me quit out. But anyways ALSO, now I just tried to log in and SL pretty much froze up my comp. I couldn't ctrl+alt+delete. I couldn't alt+f4 or ctrl+f4 whichever it is. I had to turn my comp off by turning off the power.

I got in a few minutes ago after waiting in que for abou 7 minutes I didn't think it was working because the staus bar was solid instead of changing colors, but I minimized and went on to do something else and then voila...music started playing and I was in. I think the que is working

I find that if you mouse over the "quit" button while its loading and the cursor doesn't change it means you're locked up, rather then waiting in a queue.

Sense the engine now qs connections. I think it owuld be usefull for there to be spefic messages as to what it is doing in q. Like dl 100 of 400 k. Or you are the 13 avatar in q of 40. extra. So we know if it has timed out, or has locked up.

I've had the program stop responding (mousing over "quit" didn't change the cursor, and CTRL+ALT+DEL said "not responding" but I've also had the program running for as long as 30 minutes w/out completing the log-in, which makes me think I got dropped from the queue. I haven't had a successful log-in yet today :/

I agree that a more helpful message indicating that you are queued and where you are in the queue would be a big improvement. But the queue isn't working for me, in any case. I try to log in, and after about 4.5 minutes, my client moves past "Fetching inventory" to "Connecting to the User Server" and then bounces back to the login screen. This didn't change with the new update this evening. I'm on Mac OSX, which may behave somewhat differently than the PC client does, but it's bad behavior either way. I don't think the queue method of handling logins is working. I've sent a support message about it, but gotten no response (naturally). I also sent them two suggestions, which I'm copying here for comments by the rest of you. After making the suggestion about adding a more descriptive message regarding the queue wait, I wrote: An offline version so I could build or edit objects those times I can't login would also be great. For security reasons, I'd obviously only be able to download objects which I created, but this would really help ease the frustration of not being able to login. I'd happily pay L$10/prim to upload the objects again once I could connect. Since it seems you're going to continue to have server load problems, this is something you might want to consider.
Another idea to consider would be a low-bandwidth low-load login mechanism. I've been thinking about this in terms of an accessable version for the vision-impaired, anyway. It seems to me it wouldn't be that hard to put a MUSH-like interface onto SL which would allow a "ghost" of the avatar (not animated, perhaps, to reduce server load) to move through the space, receiving descriptions of objects with names other than "Object" and descriptions, being able to chat and IM with other logged-in residents, etc. What do you all think? Evidently the load problem is starting to get difficult for them to manage. Possibly the problem is that they're routing everyone through one login server (not very scalable, if so). Another possible problem I've thought of is that if one leaves SL from a heavily populated sim, it could be difficult to get back into that sim later. But since the queueing takes place before the user server is contacted, I don't think that's the issue. What are other ways they could handle this load-balancing better? What other things could they do to keep the frustrated users (us) happy while we wait? Neko
