Are there any large boats that actually sail/move on the waterways of SL?? Seems many of the yachts are in pieces and dont actually sail. I have found a few small boats and they work for a few meters and then "sink" or get stuck and continue off the grid. Is this a common problem? Thanks for the help!

Are there any large boats that actually work on the waterways of SL? Seems that most of the bigger boats are in multiple pieces and dont actually sail or work. I have a few small boats but they seem to only work for a few meters and then either "sink" or get stuck and continue off the grid. Is this a common problem? If you know of some of the larger boats that work please let me know.....

yeah its a common problem for all vehicles. what happened was you crossed a sim border wich is natorious for causing vehicle glitching.

Alot of public waterways get jammed with poor construction, and thus restrict physical movement. High-prim yachts and ships can move, but I've yet to see any. But I admit I haven't looked. Another problem is rolling over owned lots where scripts will eject you from the parcel but leave your vehicle there.
I have taken jetskis around the northern continent. I'll have to adapt some jumpjets or something to it for all the obstacles I come in contact with. |

I have a free "yacht" that does a lot better than going a few meters. I suspect most all boats that are one linked object can make it more than a few meters. I will give you a copy if it is transferable.
I just it from somewhere north of Kirkstone, which is where I thought to look at the map, to the end of the waterway in Sugarloaf, at least 7 sims south and a few west. The boat went underwater for one second at one sim crossing, came back up by itself, and kept going. This "yacht", by the way, has prims by Shadow Weaver and a script by Fixit Galatea. _____________________

Hi Oso,
Although they are susceptible to the sim crossing glitches that affect all physics based vehicles (thats why most vehicle designers make them copyable), I and my customers have been successful in logging many, many meters in my yachts. See them here. IM me inworld if you'd like a demo. ![]() Best regards, Jac _____________________

While they're not yachts, the SL standard for wind-driven boats (if that's what you mean by "actualy sail"
is the Flying Tako series by Kanker Greenrace (avalible at his docks for $1 each. I believe the script is open source and you can drop it into nearly any-other vehicle-ready boat you have mod perms on.The reason you don't see many larger boats that work as vehicles is because of strict prim limits: physical objects (which is what most vehicles are) can only be 30 prims or less. Jesrad Seraph has an open source script for making vehicles that don't rely on physics (search the scripting forums) but I don't know anything about how it works. If you can't find an existing boat you like, you might find a scripter (or become one if you're so inclined) that can figure out how to get the functions of those two scripts to play well togeather. _____________________

I understand that the maximum size of any vehical is around +/- 31 prims, including passangers. That is a limit determined by the SL Engine.
I think the engine is also the main problem with they way the vehicles perform. All vehicles perform buggy in SL, not just sailboats, at least everyone that I have tried. Almost all vehicle rides/drives that I have taken evenually have up in a crash. The faster they move the more problems you can expect, especially when crossing sim boundaries. In spite of that, I still enjoy flying and sight seeing in SL. When I go to a club I expect lag. When riding vehicles I expect to crash. _____________________

Hydrofoil
02-14-2006 14:21
Come to sim Enchanted and back in the corner by the little log cabin, but prolly not there for long, is a hydrofoil that was custom designed for our Islands Enchanted and Escape
This is an anyone can use item for these 2 sims, the personal owned one can be rezzed and set to guest driver. Try this out and IM me how you like it. I would be glad to meet you someplace and rez one for you as guest user, once time use as long as you want until you get off. This item is very fun, and takes the sim boundries as good as any as I have seen, as that was a special request and script testing we worked on for quite a while, as we knew that was a problem. Have fun. There are also many other anyone can use items there. Enjoy, M |

If you need to make a multiple-objects boat move, try looking in here
(And here for single, >31prims object)_____________________

The 31 prim limit is a main reason for some fun sailing though I suggest the Treadue Schooner its an awesome 42 foot schoner seats 2 works on sail or motor and uses the flying tako script. it and her ketch and sloop are imho the best boats in SL

Try Mannie's Classic Yacht Sales in Funadama. Several to choose from, runabouts up to a 110 foot cruiser suitable for a liveaboard, or cruising out to that favorite secluded spot.
IM me ingame, Im on from 3pm till 7pm game time. |

From the other thread:
They [flying takos] are quite realistic for racing, but they don't feel like you're puttering around in a boat when you're just puttering around in a boat. For example, when you go aground or turn into the wind they seem to start acting more like a little motorboat than a sailboat in irons. I guess it's a shortcoming of the Havok vehicle code. I feel they sail a lot like an International 470, which has a lot of momentum and carries headway quite well when rounding up in a moderate breeze. It's true that they're not much like a much lighter boat with a draggier hull, which would lose way much more quickly. BTW, this is a configurable parameter in the script. IMHO, the least lifelike aspect of the Flying Tako script is that you can't sail by the lee at all. After looking at the script, though, this looks easily correctable and one of these days I plan to do it. It will make jibing seem a bit odder to the beginner sailor, but it'll be a better lesson for RL sailing. |
