and my net connection is fine, but yet it takes me 5-10 second to start walking, 10-15 to stop, 20 for my text to appear, ect.

Even in an empty sim wearing no attatchments, everything loads, but i lag horribly. it's been doing this on every computer i own for the past three days.

I have an HP Pavillion, an Intell G5, and a G4.

I too have been noticing a HUGE increase in performance problems lately. I am running the Linux client, but SL ran excellently before the latest update. I have spoken to a number of other users in-game who are also experiencing performance problems. Here are the symptoms I have noticed:

1.) My bandwidth hovers around dial-up speeds most of the time. I am on DSL (and have the preference setting for bandwidth set to reflect this), and have experience NO other network slowdowns outside of SL. I have 2 GB of ram, plenty of HD space, and my cache is set at the maximum (1 GB).

2.) Textures will only load if I zoom way in on them, and then they will only stay loaded for a second or two before getting fuzzy again. All avatars look like they are walking around in either camoflage, or clothing that is semi-animated because it keeps blurring. Yuck!

3.) At times my scripts and prims do not save their state properly. I have had a script revert to versions that are TWO SUCCESSFUL SAVES ago, and prims jump back to their default sizes and orientations. At times I will log in and my scripts will obviously be in a state they were NOT in before I logged out (or the sim crashed, either one). It is a little disconcerting to log in and have myself being thrown a couple thousand meters into the air for no apparent reason.

4.) As you mentioned, there is often ENORMOUS lag. I cannot start or stop walking for three to five seconds. This problem occurs most just after a teleport, but occasionally at other times as well.

NONE of this was a problem before the update. Nothing has changed on my workstation except for the new client. One day things are working great, and just after I updated and started up the client, BAM! Problems galore, and they have persisted ever since. I am almost frustrated enough at this point to give up on SL.

I really don't think this is a problem on my end, but here is my system info in case it helps for comparison:

OS Distribution: Linux Fedora Core 5
Window Manager: Gnome 2.14.0
Kernel: Linux 2.6.16-1.2080_FC5 #1 SMP Tue Mar 28 03:38:47 EST 2006 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Yes, I have this too. We have had odd problems on Nemesis since we got it last year, but usually it isn't laggy for me. Since 1.10 I have had lag, and since 1.11.1, I get this delay, several seconds before anything takes effect etc.

I have no packet loss to speak of, and my partner in the same sim doesn't have these problems.

Oddly, the people I have talked to who had the black text bug also seem to be the people who have the seconds of delay thing.

A guy who wants the old SL back
07-30-2006 00:28
Folks, I am right there with you. I run a Blazing Fast G5 Quad Core 2.5 Ghz with 4 gigs of ram and a 500 Gig HD... All of this is on a Pipeline of 8 MB Bandwith. So come on SL, I should have no problems. I didnt have any problems until the last Wednesday's update.

This is getting just a little more than aggravating and very rediculous. IF anyone comes up with a solution, email me at bruceallan2 at gmail

Thanks folks

Indeed, also experiencing these same problems (and I'm an SL newb, only been involved for a single-figure amount of days) and although I'm on a ridiculously fast connection in the UK (both up and down speeds are way more than adequate) the lag and action-reaction delays are so offputting I've not even bothered to log in for three days.

MAJOR Lag
07-30-2006 09:41
Since the new release I'm having major lag problems as well. I assumed because of added features maybe my graphics card couldn't handle it so I purchased the one recommended by Linden Lab. Great -- now I have a new graphics card but still major lag. I never had this problem before --- what's the deal here? Quit adding features and fix the lag problem that is getting worse and worse PLEASE!

This--some of it, at least--is what I've experienced too. Sounds related to the asset system load that's been troubling us lately:

/3/97/125402/1.html

I'll be watching for any new developments as well, and I'll be sure to communicate further observations and concerns to my fellow Lindens so we can address these problems as vigilantly as possible.

This is very true -- rezzing textures is slow unless cached (which is bad for us Linux folk, because at last report, RAM detection wasn't working). Unfortunately, I think it's been that way since before 1.11 even after tweaking.

Some of the lag issues may have also been due to northern California power outages that cause power grid problems (all the way down to Los Angeles usually).

There were nights that, no matter where I tracerouted to on the West Coast, the connections would die off in central California spots, regardless of the ISP chain traced through. att.net, level3.net, glbx.net, all of them had a spot where they died.

Fedora Core x has the "X My Traceroute" utility (xmtr or Applications > System Tools > Traceroute) which can be really helpful locating where problems are occurring.

For example, tonight I am still seeing problems with a router at Level3.net in Dallas and another in Los Angeles while tracing a route from Houston to SecondLife.com.

The xtraceroute utility can also plot traces on a map which can help identify problem spots geographically as well.

I am new and have been in game for less than 5 minutes.
Never in my life have I experienced such lag online.

This is enough for me to unistall Second Life.
Perhaps in a month or 2 or 6 I might pop by and see if anything has improved.

Very Frustrating
07-30-2006 18:43
When you find you are walking forever or no chat is appearing it can mean the Sim is going down.

Teazers has crashed twice on me today then their own TP's seem to want to dump us in the lagoon *giggles*. Basically I have had to relog and the second time was logged out.

Very much the same here for some weeks now, slow texture loading, blurry clothes and skins, random chat lag, packet loss almost all of the time, and peaking up high into the red while the green bandwidth bar is very low, around 100-200 kbps etc. Yet I have bandwidth and cache set high and I'm on a nominally 8 Mbps DSL connection !

I feel that I've seen a gradual degradation in performance generally over the months till my dual 2.5Ghz G5 with 2Gb RAM and X800 XT graphics is starting to feel like my old G4 again, and if I open my inventory sometimes I can hardly even type in chat just recently. Also some items just seem to get 'stuck' and will not, for example, attach.

It's awfully frustrating, so hard to have fun when you're constantly struggling to move or act :(
