hummm odd things, some things i would change on your comp tho, your pc isnt bad but with 512 ram youre going to use cpu/swapping to virtual memory alot, highly recommend min 1 gig ram nowadays.

Up your Virtual memory, youre running bit low there
System properties / advanced / performance options / advanced / virtual memory
set it to custom size 2048 min 2048 max. or higher.

SL can eat up 300-800mb ram easy depending how long you stay, and options enabled.

Not to sure what driver you have for your vid card (skimming text) but for 5xxx cards try this one
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_71.89.html

Some of your motherboard drivers are from 2001 O.o ,,, might need to update those to.

Dont really see why it wont start tho, try making a new user, log in on that, then install SL, see if it start (i had some games that didnt work and making a new user would start then, was registry mess months of junk messed up things)

Try a windows update , select - custom - Hardware optional - and look for "other drivers" usually list network card drivers, integrated sound cards, agp , and various things.

^^ this would be easier to figure out if i had the pc inperson , can only throw suggestions on you.

Try switching the keyboard to english instead of Dutch and see if it effects it. Also, the 5200 is not a stellar card so it may not be able to run at 1280x1024 resolution, try 1024x780 and see if that allows it to load.

OK so here's the summary :

- virtual memory is set to 2048;
- updating Nvidia driver led to freeze;
- deinstall and reinstall Direct X : ehh how ? Never done that in all my computeryears :(;
- updating to SP2 : thought about that but is a hassle because of problems with making backups first;
- hugs Zephria, thanks for the warm welcome :) BTW I was known as Deannea Morgan then;
- Kathmandu : thanks for your input but unfortunately they didn't work...

The dxdiag indicates a problem... it doesn't run dxinput test so probably deinstall and reinstall of dirextx should render some results. But where do I do that ?

Thank you all again for your help !

Sp2 is a real good idea. You don't absolutly need to back up everything to upgrade, it's just a really good idea. Then again you should be doing backups of really important data anyway as harddrives are about as reliable as mid-seventies Chrysler cars nowdays. On the other hand if there isn't a whole lot on your computer that you can't replace easy enough then just go ahead and do it, the chances are small that you will lose the data, more likely to lose it due to not updating..there are a lot of security holes fixed with SP2.

If it was working then encountered a problem, I recommend using system restore to get you back working again.

I'm going to do that Kathmandu, but in the meantime the failed directinput test in the dxdiag is really bugging me... I downloaded and installed DirectX 9.0c but no change..

Again, any feedback appreciated because i *really* want to enter SL again as you can imagine..

Thanks !

I am happy to be able to announce the solution to my problem ( non-updatable chipsets ) :

I told my husband of my problem yesterday and I suggested I could swap with one of the kids ( who do not have Internet access but much newer computers ), and he said : no, that's ridiculous, surf to Dell and pick yourself a nice new one ..... !!:) :) :)

So, I have to be a little more patient and then it is Hello again SL !

Thanks to all the posters for your suggestions, I will see you in-world as soon as I can !

Hugs,
Margeaux
