I've uninstalled SL (as well as the files in the SL folder), and now my computer (Win XP) won't access the internet either by wireless or LAN connection. Is it possible that I uninstalled some file critical for accessing the internet/ network function? I've also restored to a time point before the uninstalling, but still with no success. heelp me please....

Not likely. Although, I had trend micro's 30 day virus scanner installed, and after it was up, I unistalled it, and my connection died. My guess was that they figured I'd call them and buy the product. I fixed the problem by going into my network connections, and in the connection property under the general tab I unchecked the trend micro firewall and my connection came right back. Look in there, see if there's something in there that may be causing the problem...
Uncheck anything but what's listed below....

Client for Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler
Network Monitor Driver
(and of course..)
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Hope that helps.

P.S. before doing that, you can try booting into safe mode (with networking) and see if your connection is there.

If you broke Winsock then here's an application to repair it:

Also this is for Windows XP/2k.

naturally YMMV.

Run a registry cleaner, that will remove spurous entries and even make your system run faster.
Open IE (assuming you have IE) and try to open a website, what you may end up with is a webpage with 'Detect connection' click that and it will check your connections for you.
Click the two screen icon in the taskbar and that will tell you if you are receiving/sending any packets, you should get both rising when you connect to a webpage. If that icon isn't there, Start, Settings, Internet Connections and see if the connection icon has a red cross throught it, if it has, right hand click that and choose enable. If it hasn't, choose properties and then the Troubleshooting tab, you can use the functions there to test.
If that all seems to be ok, load up the webpage that access's your router and see if that is connected. If not, there should be a 'Connect' button. Your ISP may have dropped your line connection and the router may not have reset. Or unplug your router for 15 seconds, and them plug it back in, thats called 'Powering Down' and your ISP would advise you do that at least once a month, to refresh the DNS address's on its servers.
Have you checked your phone line? Maybe changed your microfilter (assuming you have ASDL)?
