Hello everyone,
I bought myself a connect3d x1900 xtx (ati compatible) - the most advanced model right now. 2nd life recognises the card as being a generic card and refuses to start. Standard ati drivers are in use and they have been installed correctly. The faq does not provide more hints. What should I do?
Best regards, Charles

Well, after extensive study and research I found the following:
The cause was a really wierd configuration problem. There was an Asus display device from the previous installed graphics card that didn't want to get off the system. This was a problem because the system was in disarray and couldn't get the right OpenGL display device.
I removed any reference to Asus software from the registry. I will not install any Asus software in the future, long hours registry editing and Windows Blue Screens are not for me!

Drivers!

Always ALWAYS use the reference drivers from the chipset manufacture for your video card. NEVER use the drivers that come on CD with the card, they are almost always outdated. The only exception is if the video card has some kina "special" functions which the generic reference drivers wouldn't support. Otherwise stick with the reference drivers from either ATI or nVidia.
But before you install a video card drivers, you must also make sure that your chipset drivers are upto date so that Windows will properly see all your drives, and the buses that they are connected too.
Also all video card drivers insist on totally removing any old video card drivers before installing new ones. Even if you're just upgrading your existing drivers to a newer one.
If you had uninstalled your asus drivers from the uninstaller app, you probably wouldn't have the headache of hunting around in Regedit. Though you'd think your new drivers would have over written those old entries. /shrug

Hi, The problem was that asus enhanced drivers were impossible to remove. My old asus video card went bananas. I removed the old ati drivers - but the asus enhanced drivers stood there - I had a weird asus driver that wouldn't get off. Then I installed the new ati drivers. Everything worked fine for a couple of days... until I tried to log into secondlife. So I needed some time to find out that opengl was broken. I don't expect being forced to have an asus card in the system in order to remove asus drivers.
