If I were to ask about why they have their update filename setup with the extensions .TMP.EXE, I would be told I am not one of the supported peoples because I am using an integrated video card, although, the last time *I* looked, my virus scanners didn't *care* what video card I had, only what files may be viruses.

Maybe my software is just paranoid, but it flags all files with a double extension {especially those where one of the extensions is executable} as Trojan Horse viruses and refuses to allow anything to work with them. In fact, it usually goes one better and deletes them before they even hava e a chance to download or exectute.

Maybe nobody else has this problem. Maybe nobody else has a virus scanner. Maybe viruses just aren't that big a problem. Who knows? All I know is that my anti virus software does not like the "Second Life Autoupdate Features" because our wonderful, forward thinking and all knowing Linden Staff have decided that they should make their updater download what looks like Trojans.

This does not strike me as a difficult problem to fix. Just drop the ".TMP" from the file extension thingy, and I would get a warning from my antivirus software, but it would not automatically delete a potentially ruinous Trojan.

Of course, I imagine with all else that the Lindens have a hard time fixing, this particular issue will also be far too difficult, time consuming, and complex to repair. I mean, someone would really risk carpel tunnel by just deleting a few characters from a filename!

If no one else has had these problems, please consider there are lots of spywares and stuff distributed in filenames like "LickMe.Bmp.Exe" and "ILoveSex.Tmp.Exe."

My antivirus isn't playing around. It's not malfunctioning. It's not misconfigured or screwed up. It's doing exactly what it's supposed to be doing, and this has ***NOTHING*** to do with video hardware, namely because SL hasn't had a chance to try to crash by that yet.

It's just that the Lindens, in their shortsightedness and ill-thought way, have kinda' forgotten how much an antivirus program would frown upon ".TMP.EXE" files. And would they be so kind as to rename this file so people who actually have decent protection on their computer against viruses and stuff can use their auto update features?

Love & Friendship & Blessed be!

http://secondlife.com/community/downloads.php

Not sure if the autoupdater do anything but download the same file with wierd name and them install it, doesnt seem to patch/update, just overwrite.

Pretty much the same size anyhoo..and what with the forums soo sloow.

Thili's right. If your software will reject us simply for having a double extension, you must either reconfigure your antivirus software, or download each update manually from the website.
