This has started since last night.
I log into SL, and I can stay there for anything from 3 seconds to 10 minutes before everything locks and I just hear 'click click click click' coming through my headphones.

What is causing this?

My equip is listed below:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+
nVidia nForce4 K8 HT2000
ATi Radeon x800gt
512 meg ram
Creative Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro

I've tried everything i can think of, updated drivers, rolledback drivers, tried the omega graphics drivers, tinkered in the BIOS.

Is this a hardware issue or is SL just screwed?

Does anyone have any ideas of what I could try.

That's what used to happen on Macs when running SL in fullscreen. Maybe it still happens, BTW, now I only run it in a window.

No solution known :(

Sounds like your computer it'self freezing up and your poor soundcard getting stuck in a endless loop.

Did you have to cold reboot the computer?
What version of Windows are you running?
Do you have 8000 icons on your desktop and 20 icons next to your clock?
Do you check for spyware?
When was the last time you scanned for viruses and trojans?

Because it might not be SL, I have been loving 1.9 since it came out. Great stuff.

-If by cold reboot you mean the reset button, yes.
-Windows XP Home
-Nope, about 10 icons on desktop and 8 in the status bar.
-Not yet, haven't reinstalled Spybot S&D
-I ran one when I installed NOD32.

Still no ideas on ways to fix this?
It's getting to the point where I can't actually stay inworld long enough to do anything.
I can't buy anything, don't have enough time to upload anything, can't sell anything.
What's the point of SL if you're unable to do ANYTHING? :(

Hey All

I am having the same problem my whole system locks up ..I MUST cold reboot. Same sort of scenario..sometimes I'm in for 30 mins mostly I lock up at the "clothes still downloading"..but soon as I try to do anything like sit down, change clothes, tp, stand if I could sit.. anything basically will cause this to happen. But it's not routine, sometimes it makes me freeze other times not.

I also have done a complete uninstall and reinstall, checked for virus and spyware. Its been happening a good hmm say 20 hrs for me.

I've been playing over a year and havent had anything like this before.

System specs;

Windows XP Home Edition V 2002 SP2
Pentium M 1.6Ghz
ATI Mobility Radeon 9100 IGP(no issue with Vid card been running it for 9 months)
1.2G Ram

This has been happening constantly to two friends of mine since the 1.9 upgrade. Constantly freezing up every few minutes. This also happened occasionally before in crowded areas but not with this frequency. We're talking 3 or four times an hour with only them in the sim.

No idea what their specs are but I'll get them and post them later.

I'm curious as to what might be the cause.
I thought I had it cracked last night. I uninstalled my SC drivers and went in without sound.
Managed to stay for nearly an hour and had almost forgotten the problems until, click, locked.
Seems I just got lucky rather than having solved the issue.

The Lindens have mentioned a new viewer update, hopefully that'll fix the problems.

I don't get the locking problem but the crashing peroblem since the last updates. Every 20 minutes to an hour my second life locks then crashes.

All this made worse by the fact that Second Life has been working fine on my PC until the last series of updates.

It's made Second Life totally pointless as I cannot do anything.

Unfortuanately I don't hold out much hope for the update as the recent server side updates have done nothing to improve the situation!

Me too... SL keeps locking up my puter
03-19-2006 21:08
Just had to jump in here after a very frustrating weekend. Every time I log into SL, I freeze... not just in SL, but my mouse dissapears, and my entire computer is frozen. I can't even cntrl-alt-delete to shut down SL. I have done EVERYTHING I can think of this weekend to fix the problem. I've checked drivers, did a system rollback, checked for latest Windows updates, uninstalled SL and reinstalled, and even upgraded memory to 1GB and I'm just at a loss. I can't seem to keep my computer up and running. Hubby and I have the exact same systems, and he's not witnessing any problems. If anyone has suggestions, please holler. Going through withdrawls here.

Basic trouble shooting. Turn everything in SL OFF. Ie settings, cranck them down to min, turn sound off, turn all the goodies like local light off. Slowly (if it runs) start turning stuff back up, eventually you'll find out what's causing the problem.

Once a game didn't run for me, the video was all torn, it ended up being that the game didn't like my 5.1 surround sound. Go figure.

Done that, I've ended up taking Jesaph's advice and i've installed Ubuntu 5.10 AMD 64 on a seperate partition, so I'll run the Linux SL (LSL? heh). I'll post back if it works.

Well I know the crash problem very very well. Same video card ATI 9000/9100 as izvire Eldritch and worked fine before the update last week. Then crash central. Sometimes it works for a few minutes but as soon as you try teleporting or moving much...total freeze that requires a full system cold boot. And as I said, this system ran SL fine before this last update. And the interesting thing is, it worked fine in the preview.

Talked with lindens and they said the video drivers are too old, but the newer drivers don't work with this system (tried that). And HP says they are not going to update the drivers and basically said "well it won't run everything". BUT it worked fine BEFORE this last update. Now you can't tell me that the Lindens are unable to backtrack the last few changes they did in the viewer from the preview to the main grid and find the problem. I suspect the problem was generated from the "emergency fix" for a bug and that delayed the grid opening for several hours.

Anyway by the sounds it is a problem but does not appear to affect enough of the population to be a "concern".

LOL... Well Linux is a beast to get running right but once it is... Oooo Boy... Anyways... It seems that I've been noticing that SL has problems with NForce4 boards... I don't know this for sure but certain configurations... Understand me when I say that I don't own nor plan to own an NForce board... I love Nvidia... But They aren't good enough to make a Mobo for me... I'll stick with something else until they've gotten rid of the idea... Try going and updating your Mobo drivers and see if that helps... And as far as Linux is concerned if you ever need help installing it again make sure you have a seperate PC to look stuff up on and always, I repeat, ALWAYS have someone you can call on when the &^%* hits the fan... Because it will... Unless you've done it over and over and over again... It's going to screw up... Ubuntu is nice and all but it's not as user friendly as every has made it out to be... Try something a little more friendly first like Mandriva or Fedora... And if your really brave and want the top performance... Then you can learn the 15 hour long process of installing a Stage1 Gentoo install... Now that's fun...
