this past week i had a new system rebuilt.

Asus P5N-E-SLI
Field Value
CPUID CPU Name Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20GHz

2GIG RAM
NVIDIA 8600 512

My problem is this. i can go anywhere on the net with no problem except SL .. the moment i land its a major lock up where only option is to hit the restart button.
Im on cable no router.
sometime i can stay for 5-10 minutes before it locks me up.
Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

Thanks
Blues

all i can recommend is make sure you have the latest drivers for your vid card.

being a new machine, are you on vista?

Maybe something's wrong with the install or cache?

> uninstall SL

> if your virus checker is an invasive one like Norton or McAfee, configure it to ignore SL's data directory "C:\Documents and Settings\<your userid>\Application Data\SecondLife"

> Delete said directory above

> Delete as much of your temp directory as you can

> Reinstall SL

Forgive me if you already tried this.

check to see that you have the latest drivers from intel as well, that seems to be the source of a lot of crashes.

Kinda sounds like your network. Have you tested the performance of your link? And, have you tried power cycling your cable modem (let it stay off for about 15 minutes to let all network cache's empty).

What company is your cable provider?

Sounds to me like network bottlenecking, virus scanners on that spec system would not effect SL,You may have something on your system thats either hogging bandwidth or maybe to many processes running,if you could press CTRL + ALT + DEL then on processes tab see how many are running, also look for any excesive large memory intensive processes and post them it might help.By excessive i mean 50,000 + = minor but high,100,000 + apart from second life would be something to look out for.

I am now reinstalling RC "again". In task manager.. i have 41 running processes.. the largest memory user is IE7 @63,084. Under performance cpu usage right now with the download going on and in here is at 2% My cable provider is Cogeco. With this GC there should be no bottleneck involved. Its openGL. I'm just at my wits end on this. I may have to put my older system back together and use it just for SL. Seems its only when i had this built that this is happening. Grrrrrrrrr

I just noticed that this particular machine has an nVidia SLI chipset, 650i. The old 680i version of this was plagued with all kinds of ugly problems when first launched, but I think those have been pretty much all worked out by now. But, since this machine is a new rebuild, could there be some SLI magic that needs to be done (or undone), either in the BIOS settings or in the nVidia control panel? (Sorry, my only nVidia card is in a Linux box with an Intel chipset, so I'm pretty useless here.)

Also, does anybody know how to get some useful debug info for this situation, with the hard lock-up? It would sure be nice to know whether to focus on network or graphics eccentricities.

When I was debugging a crash situation once I actually read the SL startup and crash logs on my disk, and discovered that I had accidently set an OpenGL parameter that was causing the client to crash hard, sometimes bluescreen, without comment.

I don't know how to step someone thru that in the forums other than having folks post the whole log, bleh .... and really in general you'd need someone really knowledgable about the client to read them. Prolly one of the open source developers. I just lucked out with that issue, it was fairly clear.

I will try anything right about now. I know of a few others that upgraded their graphics card only to not be able to stay long in SL. I get no error reports or messages when i lock up. I actually stayed in long enough this time to leave an offline message to a gf that got married this morning.. which i couldnt attend grrrrrrrrrrrr.

Some one has to have a solution to this. I'm not the only one having this problem.

Did you see this recent thread on tips for Nvidia users? Maybe something there will help:
