I would be saying its your 1.6 ghz thats slowing you down. Secondlife is very cpu intensive and therefore you should at least have a 2.0 ghz p4 to run stable.
By the way, how much memory do you have?

The minimum system requirements for SL only require an 800 mhz processor, and the recommended specs suggest exactly what the OP has - a 2000+ at 1.6 ghz. Not to say that that config will give great performance, but it shouldn't be locking up like the OP is describing. This sounds to me more like an overheating problem than anything else. I'd suggest checking the CPU fan for proper operation and the CPU and video card heat sinks to make sure that they aren't clogged with dust, cat hair, or whatever. P2

It could also be that hes running other apps in the background. If not that then i'd buy compressed air and start cleaning out your computer. I know i have to do that at least 3 times a year. I have cats.

WoW passes off lots of things to the GPU to do that SL makes your CPU do. What kinda cooling do you have in your case and what HSF are you using to cool that CPU? Try runnin SL in a window and put up a program like motherboard monitor or something to watch your CPU Temp, see if its overheating while you play.

Thanks for the help guys, I don't think its a cleanliness issue as the PC is a new build, new motherboard, cpu, psu etc. and also this problem has only manifested itsself in the last few days, I haven't changed anything since I had the rebuild done, and SL has been running fine till 3 days ago, maybe it's due to the SL update I installed on Saturday.

I just downloaded and ran Motherboard Monitor 5, had another crash, CPU temp was 54-55 Degrees Celsius, is this too hot?

Temp probes on different motherboards will have some variance. However, 54-55C is well under any reasonable threshold. Though I also am curious about how much RAM you have.

Ok so i checked the fan and found there was very little thermal paste so i glooped it up nicely, also put a different fan in and the temp peaked at 47, so i guess that helps a little.
Regards to the RAM, i have 1 stick of PC3200 512MB 400 which ive had for ages with no problems.
