I've had no problems with SL until I switched modems. I'm plugged directly into a Comcast cable modem now, and sometimes I stay connected for 2 hours, and sometimes I can't connect for an hour. While I'm playing my character either stops or continues moving in one direction and the bandwith drops to 0. I disconnect, and try to log in again, and it logs me in, but I still can't move and have no bandwith. I try to log in a second time, and a message comes up that the region is logging me out. When I try to connect a third time, I get a message that it's logging me out and the connection won't be available until a certain time. After I connect a fourth time after the time mentioned, either I successfully log on, or the process begins all over.
It usually happens when I try to edit something.

Its doubtful it has anything to do with SL, can you try switch back to your old modem and see if you still have problems?

Ah. I have some gear here I would love to use but my connection is very unstable with it, yet the same gear at work is rock solid. I think my home line is just rubbish :/

I usually get this message in the log after I try to edit my head: Key up event missed, resetting
Also, right when this happens, I get 100% packet loss for a fraction of a second to everything my computer's connected to.

Ok, pretend I am a 4 year old and explain how switching modems involved school? I mean if you are using a school connection in a dorm you may be running into proxy problems and bandwidth issues. Then again if you are running straight off the modem you should have a very good firewall set up as this sort of connection is an open invitation to spyware, hackers and viruses without one. It may mean your firewall is blocking parts of SL or you simply have a crappy modem and it does indeed happen often. Might run a trace route and see if your connection to the net is having problems.
