SL makes my router crash!

I have been having problems with my ADSL router (BT Voyager 205) crashing: all the lights come on together and the connection drops. So I guess there's something wrong with the router, BUT

this ONLY happens when I'm on SL (if I don't play SL the router's fine and stays connected all day)

and ONLY when I'm at Island Of Spirits (if I go to other sims I'm fine for hours, but IoS usually causes a crash within a few minutes)

and it's ONLY started happening since I installed the 1.18.2.1 viewer (before that I was on 1.18.0.6)

So I could just avoid Island of Spirits, but it's my home, where I work, and where most of my friends are.

I'm going to try to get my router replaced, but it seems really weird that it only does this when I'm on SL and only on one sim (that I know of so far). Anyone got any ideas?

Even though they look like and pretend to be toasters, routers are software systems like any other and have their share of bugs. Sometimes they can have a software upgrade, sometimes the ISP just replaces it with a newer model.

SL demands resources like almost no other application which may be why you are seeing this correlation. Running BitTorrent with no throttling on might be a good test of whether the router (likely actually a modem, but no big difference) falls over under high, continuous load.

Hmmm well if Malachi's right and it's a load issue, then setting your network bandwidth lower in Preferences should fix it. Say to 400. In my experience, anything lower than 350 and SL just gags completely.

Oh and btw, before it crashes, are you seeing bunches of packet loss?

If you're at all techie, you might try connecting to your modem/router via its web interface and seeing if it has any error logs you could look at. The tutorial or manual your router came with undoubted has instructions on doing this.

Oh, and I assume you are not using wireless, right?

i have seen this, and i have seen 2 things fix it:
1. reset router, unplug the electric from it for 30 seconds.
2. router firmware upgrade. usually available from the router manufacturers website.

More than likely one of the BT Voyager 205's quaint eccentricities. I've heard of them crashing during intensive streaming (like watching videos) before now, and I guess SL's constant thirst would have a similar effect.

Don't believe me? Go Google. This router has a very bad name.

If you end up buying another router, avoid the BT brand like the plague. Go for Netgear, Linksys .. heck, even those £30 quid Addon routers from Maplin are better than BT units. At least you can install custom firmware from routertech on those after Addon stop supporting it.

Turning the router off and back on makes it work again, but if I go back to Island of Spirits the crash happens again in a few minutes.

I've tried to lighten the load by turning down bandwidth and draw distance but it doesn't help.

I'm not using wireless. There does seem to be a lot of packet loss before the crash.

I'll try a firmware upgrade, and I'm also trying to get BT to send the new router that they promised but didn't deliver.

I've seen a lot of people saying bad things about the Voyager 205 so I think it must be the router's fault somehow. I'm just trying to work out why it happens on one particular sim and not any other sim that I've been to. What is it about this one place that triggers the fault? And why did it only start when I upgraded to the new viewer? (I don't think it's voice because I'm fine on other voice enabled sims)

Firmware upgrade seems to have fixed it. If I'd read your reply before I'd have gone to Abbotts to see if it happened to me there.
