Is there any reason why when I play DVD's in Second Life it keeps refreshing itself. It goes a bit then stops and replays from the start some more then stops and replays from the start again and so on.

How are you playing DVDs in SL?

If it is an item you bought, your best bet is to contact the item creator for support.

Possibly your bandwidth is not high enough for the stream, or the server the stream is on is overloaded.

If it's the first case, upping the bandwidth allocated to SL might fix it. Edit -> preferences.
If it's the second, not much you can do about it except ask for a refund.

not only that this service is most of the time completely illegal :)

I suggest also that you ask to the seller his video rental license :)

Stream

This is a common stream problem. When SL reaches the end of the streaming data, instead of pausing and waiting for more data, it loops back to the beginning.

The fix: start watching the video, then pause it for 5-10 minutes per hour of the video's length. Then press play again after more of the video has buffered. You should be able to watch it without problem unless it is a very long movie.

Setting the ingame bandwidth (in preferences, network tab) to 2/3rds of your connection (assuming you have at least a 1.5mb connection) allows the client to run 'normally' and allows for the media to stream onto your PC before the client picks it up and renders it. The client itself doesn't do the streaming part itself, the API call from the Client to the OS does that.. it is only when you have sufficient data in the cache, will the client takeover and render that media. Having your bandwidth too low, slows down the data rate to the client from LL servers... too high and it stifles the additional data rate that the OS uses to stream the media in readiness for the client to use.
For the most part, the bandwidth is dynamic, but only within a restricted rate either side of the setting you make in preferences.

Open up Quicktime and look at the proferences, adjust the slider in there from quick start to larger cache.. QuickTime pluggin is what the OS uses for its settings.

I don't know about the source of the 'DVD' media is coming from, but from my experience, many suppliers of 'closed systems' (prims with a fixed url inside), and in particular Porn and Ilegal copies of 'latest movies' are in fact run from freebie/very cheap webhosting packages or off someones 'spare' PC with a T3 connection. Whilst great for general hosting, that cannot cope with streaming multiple copies of movies and they are not designed to do so.
Our own media creations are prepared to a strict specification of less than 100kbps data rate and hosted on dedicated servers which allow us to stream 1,000's of movies (not porn or ilegal media) to 1,000's of viewers at the same time.
