I have been beta testing Windows Vista! since the longhorn builds a few years ago and now microsoft have finally released a version stable enough to use as a main OS (beta2 build 5472) i thought id have a try running SL on it, well as you may have guessed it doesnt work, i know that vista is unsupported at this time but i was wondering if anyone had managed to get SL to run on it.

Basically the problem i have is SL starts up no problem but once its loaded on my desktop i, all i get is a white screen, i cant type my login info in because i dont see the boxes, i can mouse over where they are and my mouse pointer changes to the single line you get for a text box but when i enter my login info it stays blank, i know the info is correctly entered because i have checked the logs.

Anyway if anyone has successfully managed to run SL under Windows Vista.. .reply as i dont really wanna go back to XP.

So I hear Vista does not support OpenGL yet.

SL is done in OpenGL.

I ran SL on vista for about a month until windows updated my network driver by mistake and then I couldnt get it to do a rollback. What I had to do is install a xp driver for my video card then it ran just fine!

Ok how did you manage to install XP graphics drivers on a Vista! system? Vistas driver architecture is totally different to windows XP also when you try to install XP drivers you get a huge "no digital signature" error and install aborts.

Whats this business about OpenGL not being supported in vista? I have a lot of games that use OpenGL and they all run fine on Vista! so im guessing that OpenGL is supported by Vista!, Also if you read the SL log files you will see that when its loading it doesn't make any references to OpenGL but it does however make references to DirectX.

I know that Vista! uses DirectX 10, this may be the problem here as microsoft announced that backwards compatibility to DX9 and lower has been cut due to significant changes in the new DX10 API. Although they also said that DX9 and lower programmed games will run via a software layer but this does not seem apparent with SL.

Vista has openGL,

For people who want to use Vista & Secondlife
Ati beta vista drivers do no supports openGL
Nvidia beta vista drivers have support for openGL

Got Nvidia card?, no problem with Vista,

Xp drivers on vista?, Vista uses Longhorn Display Driver Mode (LDDM) so that would be quite impossible to install a winxp/2k driver on Vista, doesnt mean i havnt tried myself, hehe.

I'll belive that ill belive if you show how, cause that make one very nice blue screen on the 6 times i tried : p

Vista dont have dx10 no, (check it yourself when youre in vista) for stability reasons they put out a lower directx version on vista then they have out for windows xp and Vista definatly dont use directx for SL, then ati users would be able to run SL with the current beta drivers ati has.

Vista does have DirectX 10 (you can check it yourself in Vista using dxdiag.exe). in fact it's DirectX 10 beta, and it won't be released on XP.

I have NVIDIA card, latest NVIDIA vista forceware drivers installed, tried it on the drivers that shipped with Vista! 5472 but they dont work wither. i have also looked for beta NVIDIA drivers but i cant find any on their site.

Im sure i will manage to find a workaround sooner or later but till then im afraid SL will have to wait. :s

Right click on the Second Life icon, click on the compatability tab. Check it to run in XP Service Pack 2 compatability mode. Put a check beside disable desktop composition.

SL isn't compatable with Aero.

I'm using 5472.5 and SL runs great with the settings above.

DX 10 has been in Vista since before Beta 2 was released in May. Not only that the most current release of DX for XP is 9.0c.
