The Sun and Textures

Recently I've been working on an prim'ed avatar head and applying textures to it. All looks fine at mid day or night, but at sunrise or sunset the textured parts of my head take on a grey colouration on the parts directly facing the sun and blend into the 184/166/121 (R/G/B) colour of my head on the parts facing perpendicular to or away from the sun at those times. I've got the same colouration on my avatar as a skin, but I don't get the greying effect there. Is this some kind of texture/lighting issue between avatar textures and prim textures?

Yes. Low sun typically borks attachment textures, especially right after you put them on. As time goes by and things get burned in it gets less noticable.
