I wonder if there is a way to send messages into SL. It is great to get IM via Mail when you are online, but can’t enter SL. To me, this happens very often.
Does any one knows a way to answer IM's with out logging into SL?

From my limited knowledge, you can check IM's to <my email address> when you are off line, but its a one way street, until someone IM's you, and then you can reply, but the ability to do so, times out within 30 minutes (or so), given that SL email can arrive some 48 hours later.. its a 'make do' at best.

Better than nothing

Hurray - yes it works! I got an IM forwarded as E-Mail to me. Simply replying to that cryptic E-Mail address did it. The answer came within a minute. An hour later – again it worked. But replying to that answer produced error messages. Obviously it’s worth a try replying to an IM you have received, but it’s not granted that it works. At least I don’t feel completely deaf-mute any more when I am on the web, but not in SL.

SL to RL communcation...

There's a multitude of ways... replying to IM--> emails will work, also, libSL has an executable that will allow you to "log on" enough to chat, also, I'm sure something can be done via http.

... libSL has an executable ...

LOL
I am not one of these Linux Chix. I am the one who bought a new PC, plugged the electricity in – and wondered why the silly machine didn’t want to start. An hour later I found out it has a “power on / off”-button that I had to switch on …

To the lovers of coding: Go along with the “libSL” (what ever that might be). To any one else: This recommendation I got by coincident (big thanx goes to Arne) might be easier. Get this inworld tool (at the moment it’s for free) at SLX, rez it and use the mail address it gives you – that’s all!

Heh, libSecondLife is a group that has been reverse engineering the second life client and creating a library of client functions (like chatting). The goal is to create a library of functions so people can write non in-world utilities, like chat programs that allow you to IM in world residents, perform monetary exchanges, etc, without logging on using the client. Also, once all the functions are there, one could write their own client if they were so inclined. Since LL has released the client as open source, it's become alot easier for libSL to do the things they want. LibSL has taken alot of heat recently because they're the ones who wrote copybot, which was intended as a debugging tool (rather than a tool to steal objects). Anyways, I do recall seeing a chat program that allowed you to log onto SL and chat only (no graphics or functions other than IMing an avatar). Something like that would be usefull for people who would like to be able to IM in world residents at work without installing the entire SL client package/use all that bandwidth at work.

Thanx a lot for explaining libSL - i really have no idea about technical issues, so it is vey helpful for me :))

If you remember the name or a web link to the chat program you talked about - that would make even me try to find out how it works!

www.libsecondlife.org

it's not very "user friendly" so if you're not that adept at the technical stuff you may need to find someone who is to help you out.

Actually in my Opinion !!! i think lindens should have a java based chat like the ones on yahoo chat group ones ... and have a web page
set up for it for True live help have rules of Conduct there and have and have it where like a few ppl on at a time and then have them hire ppl to .... monitor it ... to help people out ....

@ Johan Laurasia: Thank you for the explanation and the link - I guess it's a bit to technical for me

@ all others: Nope, it's not a joke that I couldn't start my new PC because I have forgotten to switch on the power bottom

Accessing SL without SL (client)
07-24-2007 15:28
Again, Arne found another way to participate in SL without using the SL client. This time he has found a web blog of a woman from the UK who is developing a tool that lets you log in with your web browser. You cant see graphics but use text boxes for IM and chat.

It’s “experimental work in progress”, and it’s better NOT to log in with your main account (just use an alt av) but it’s definitely worth a closer look at.

Interested?
