Hi, I have been having the same major problems with SL crashing on my brand new desktop computer.
I have updated the cpu drivers, the mb drivers and the video drivers. I've even changed the affinity on the game so it only works on 1 core of the cpu.
I am as frustrated as everyone else with the same problems it seems.
I logged in after the changes and thought things were working well as I was online for several minutes, then... crash. the program closedl. I sent the crash report and a new secondlife.log to support. logged in again and found that I was online for slightly shorter time... crash... report sent... logged in again... in for even shorter time and crash.
I am able to get online with my notebook... Dell SPX Gen 2 but the new desktop... more powerfull with better graphics... I'm getting so frustrated! I can't stay logged in for more than about 60 seconds ... if even that.
Here are the specs for my computer:
Asus A8N32-sli Deluxe (new drivers) AMD x2 4400 (new drivers 1.3.xx something) Cool Master Liquid cooling XP Pro SP2 with all the newest updates Black Thermal Silent Pure 680W power supply On board sound EVGA GeForce 7900GT 256MB x16 PCIE (updated drivers) Linksys wmp54gs 802.11G PCI speed booster (speed boost off) Corsair XMS PC 3200 DDR 2 Gig
I also have used the setting where you start the game, ctrl-alt-del into task manager, right click on secondlife.exe, click on Affinity and uncheck one of the processors... I've tried cpu0 off and cpu1 off... no difference.
The wireless link has excellent strength and I know the network is fine as I use the same wireless network with the notebook and I seem to be doing just fine there.
Any way... HELP ! ! ! ! ! ! I really want to use my desktop for the game and no one has come up with the right fix.

additional information

I also do not have a firewall on and the AV software wasen't even installed yet when I installed the game.
So many people are having this crash problem since the new releases of software in the last month.
I absolutely love the Flex clothing and hair but would happily give it up to have the stability of the game back.
I'm one of the few lucky people who have 2 computers... and SL runs on the notebook. It just won't stay connected on the desktop and I'm NOT trying to log on from both computers at the same time.
Please please please!!! Someone help me get this game running on my desktop!!!!!!

Help ! !! !
06-18-2006 12:21
I've worked with telephone support and email support and their latest suggestion is to delete the new video drivers I installed and use a program from http://drivercleaner.net/professional.html . I don't really know if this will work as I had totally rolled this brand new computer back to the very beginning, then installed the MS updated, the video drivers, the cpu drivers and the MB drivers so everything is totally new and has the current drivers. I am unsure if the driver cleaner would be needed since I uninstalled the original drivers and then installed the new ones as directed. With them being from the same company, would there really be a need to use the program? Doesn't the build in uninstall of XP do what is needed?? I really need some help here and no one seems to have any suggestions or fixes!! I want a FIX! I want my SECONDLIFE!!!! Katrina Keen

Well the problem with windows is it sometimes leaves shadows of files here and there, so a program that can help you find the stuff may actually help.
For example, XP "eats" my scanner driver every time it updates itself, but the file is still there, just not useable. So I have to uninstall and reinstall every couple weeks.
Anyway, sometimes it leaves stuff behind that it probably shouldn't, so I'd try the program anyway.

I tried it. I didn't even stay in the game 30 seconds before it crashed back to the desktop. Log report sent off to tech support.
This game really doesn't seem to support or run on the high end computers even though everyone was instructed to get the updated drivers.
Please please please!! Lindens... HELP!!!!!!

sorry Katrina, no solution from me

Well, looks like i need to join my name on the list. I am now also having those incessant crash.
Everything has always been running fine and without any changes made to my computer, it suddenly started to crash each time i logged in.
I've, none the less, updated my video driver (catalyst 6.5) but without any good result. Everything else is up-to-date. I've also tried removing all "extra" graphic option, lowering quality/resolution, i mean, the game was running in black&white once i had finish (kind of), but the problem is still there.
The only thing i've noticed, is that some SIM are more tolerant; meaning that i could go to a sim like "Ellaidhu" and stay there for quite a while without problems but would immediately crashed when going back to "Nefrax".
Hoping for a solution/suggestion soon.
Thanks Cervantes

and the saga continues

Thanks for the link to beta drivers. I'm usually pretty leary about trying beta drivers when I've been having problems but I have bookmarked the site just in case.
Well, I removed one of my memory chips so I now have 1 gig of ram since I was having strange happenings of sudden reboots and boot loops where my computer was booting and rebooting before it got to the desktop.
Error message seems to have been traced to bad memory. So far, it seems like I got lucky and removed the bad chip the first try. Time will tell and I'm NOT going to hold my breath
I did a full reinstall of Windows as there appeared to have been an error with that, as well.
I have installed the newest video drivers but haven't updated the cpu and MB drivers yet.... unfortunately, I got called into work before I could do any further updating.
I've downloaded the newest version of SL and am thinking on installing it and seeing if it will run without the other updates.....
Hate to wait till Friday but I have a full day of work tomorrow plus being on call which means another very late day before I can come home and relax with SL. ::grumble::
Hope to keep this topic active till I get this beautiful new computer to running SL.
Yes, I'm addicted to SL and proud of it!

I had the same problem with some memory a few weeks back. I added 512Mb to my system which aleady had 500Mb, and I would crash after about 1 minute. I then started going into boot loops unitl I went in to safe mode and shut it down that way. Took the RAM out and updated my XP SP2 and the problem went away.
My BIOS was set for auto detect and the RAM was showing fine, but it still crashed. Took out the RAM and it workled.
I still have the RAm and am going to try it again now that SP2 is updated....I'm just scared to now. LOL
Mine could be bad memory I suppose but I would think that if it gets accepted at boot up and registers as being ther, then it would be ok..but maybe not.
BTW, my memory was Kingston 3200 ddr

The memory is Corsair xms 1024 mb pc 3200ddr ram that came with my brand new computer. As of Friday, the computer will be 3 weeks old. I had a niggling worry in the back of my mind that it might be bad memory and, if it winds up that I was lucky enough to remove the bad chip of the pair on the first attempt, the company will be replacing it. I just have to make sure that I have the correct chip removed as the bad one so I'm waiting a bit to let the computer run. Hhuummm, does anyone know of some good programs that might stress the cpu and chips for burn in purposes. Maybe a web site. Preferably free. This is the first desktop computer I ever ordered mail order. (have gotten notebooks mail order before) Apparently, they only installed the software that came with the different parts and they did NOT do any updates before sending the computer out. I also wonder if they did any burn in testing. All others have been custom built locally and had all the drivers up to date and had been stressed and burned in before I got them home. This place had been recommended to me by a gamer who had 2 of their computers with no problem and he runs that Nascar racing game on his computers. I saved $1000 over what I could have gotten the computer for locally but, now I wonder about all the headaches I have had with it since getting it. Was the savings worth it. If I get things solved and SL running on it, yes... if not.... I'm not going to be a happy camper as I have been working with their tech support since I got the computer about the probem with the game not running and this reboot and boot loop problem. So far, the computer stayed stable over night with 4 copies of IE on the screen. I knew, if the desktop was empty when I got up, that the computer would have booted sometime while I was asleep. I'll leave things set up this way till I get home from work tonight in the hope that it will stay stable. I have not updated the drivers for the cpu or the MB at this time. I've just installed the newest, non-beta drivers for the video card. I'm thinking I might test the game in this configuration first, and if not having any luck, update those other two drivers one at a time and try again. Any other suggestions?? Katrina

Thanks for the link to the stressing programs... I will give them a try.
As for 3 D games to stress the computer... Secondlife is actually the only game I have been playing and I haven't had time or the energy to install it again and try it as I have been working over 12 hour days and am exhausted when I get home. I hope to give the install another try either Friday after work or on the weekend since I have the whole weekend off and I"m NOT on call!! hurray for me!!!!
I honestly can say that I have had 4 copies of IE and one Windows Explorer window open for over 24 hours and the computer has NOT rebooted itself. Before removing the chip and reinstalling Windows, I wouldn't even get one IE open without a sudden boot.
I'm still so leary and scared to try installing the game for fear of being disappointed and frustrated yet again.
I will go check the programs you suggested and see what they will be able to do for me.
Katrina the exhausted.

Both are very nice score's and they look ok to me. Did you have any issues with the programs or any did they ran ok to you ? Mines are about the same score as yours maybe higher in cpu score but thats about it

Gawd it would be nice to see some common hardware cropping up with these crashes but I can't see a pattern on the face of it.
My 3800+ X2, Asus A8R-MVP, X1800 ( and partners X850 ) combination is rock solid. Only crashed on high res screenshots.
I just can't see a corrolation, we have X2 on NF4, single AMD's on NF3, Intel's all crashing but nothing I can see that could be a common factor.

Both programs ran just fine for me. I also went to http://pcpitstop.com and ran a full diagnostic on the computer and I got good scores there, too. PC computers are so customizable. No one seems to have exactly the same machine at all. As for heat... My computer is liquid cooled and I have a temperature guage that shows CPU, HDD and VGA temps all between 28 and 30 C so I don't think that's an issue for me right now. After all the problems I have had with the computer and with getting SL to run on it, I'm actually scared to install SL and see if it will run now that the computer seems stable. Tremble, shake, whimper Wish me luck!!! Katrina the scardy kat

From: Miguel Fahid well the most common thing is when it crashes for me its the heat As in the PC overheating.. Mmm that's possible although you'd expect something like Oblivion to exhibit similar symptoms. However I do know the temp of my PC is fine and it's stable so it's definatly an avenue to explore. That said login crashes which some people are getting are unlikely to be heat related.
