On my Mac I hear wind noises always, land music often, footsteps and collision bumps and object-generated sounds never .
Have I got some settings wrong? Or is the Mac client defective for all its users? Or is it just some Macs?
I have a 1.25GHz Alum Powerbook G4 running MacOs 10.3.6.
I've tried messing with port forwarding through my NAT in case different sounds used different ports (I'm scraping the barrel here) but no joy.
Any help/ advice gratefully received.
I thought there might be a Mac forum but I can't find one. Are there only a few of us?

chalky, that seems to be a problem many mac users have but not all. i have UI sounds and have never had a problem with them. i would suggest reporting it to the lindens as a bug report. but i have heard other mac users have been doing that for a while and still no fix. good luck

a friend with the same problem fixed it by making a new user on her mac. and when running sl under the new user account she has all the UI sounds. (thats new user on the mac not a new SL user)
if you do a search in world for mac in the groups tab of find you can join a mac group.
