Many people are reporting problems with the upgrade patcher. It has been suggested that this may be connected with anti-virus or firewall software.

Rather than speculate let's do a poll!

Thanks for this, Roberta. It's about time someone gathered some statistics on this subject.

Thanks - Symantec are the company who sell Norton Anti-Virus - so I'll count that as a Norton and Bad vote.

AVG is the only one that updates nicely that I have ever had. Norton let me PC get all sort of buggered and I was up-to-date with it. AVG cleaned me up and I am happy. I may just send them a few $$.

I am running XP Pro

So far there doesn't seem to be much of a pattern. Win XP/2000 could be a factor of course as we haven't asked for that.

Lee Linden says it is anti-virus or firewall. I posted anti-virus as I have the problem and don't run a software firewall.

Maybe a pattern will emerge with more data - who knows...

Not sure what it looked like when you last posted, but right at this moment I'd say there is a pretty clear pattern emerging. So far, only 17.4% of people are having any patching problems at all, which means the updater works just fine for the vast majority of people. The data could change as more people respond, but right now it looks like out of every huindred people who use the updater, 82 or 83 of them will have no trouble. Not too shabby, considering most people have trouble with at least SOMETHING on their computers every day.

For those running anti-virus, it's even better. Only 12.5% of people with anti-virus are having problems, which means that a whopping 87 or 88 out of every hundred people who are running their computers with ant-virus like they're supposed to aren't having problems. I actually expected to see mroe anti-virus conflicts with the updater than that, so i'm a little suprised actually.

What I'm not suprised about is the fact that the percentage of people having problems who don't run anti-virus is more than double that of people having problems who do run it. 28.5% of people without anti-virus are having trouble. As would be expected, the little tiny headaches caused by anti-virus are nothing compared to the problems that arise when it's not used.

Lee Linden said that the problems were caused by either anti-virus or firewall software interfering with the patcher. I don't see this so far.

Patching's bad on three different computers running three different software packages on two different networks with two different IP's. Disabling the software makes no difference on any of them.

Likely more than one factor involved here, but I haven't been able to find it.
