Sorry I f I haven't been able to find this, but I have read a few places recomending to reduce your bandwidth to 500kbps, I run a 20Mbps connection (that seems to run frequently at 4000kbps) and wondering if it really does better for me than running at 1500kbps, I can't see a difference myself, or is it stealing bandwidth from other users? Upload rate at 128kbps ok too?
And cache, I been told by some to have it at 1000 and others to reduce it to 100?
Outfit composite Limit?

I see squat diffrence in SL using max/min settings its still slow ^.~ 100-1500kb 100-1000mb cache (bring back 10gig cache -.-) Outfit composite Limit , just remember your baked textures (outfits bakded into 1 texture to upload ~server~to anyone who see you) your avatar has worn or something its useless, still see no diffrence on performance on 1-10 12/2mbit cable
pc's i use; 64-3500+ 2gig ram 7900gt 256 x2-4200 2gig ram 7900gt 256 e6400 4gig ram 8800gt 320mb e6700 4gig ram 8800gt 640mb

You don't 'steal' bandwidth from anyone setting the ingame bandwidth high. In fact, for the most part, this is 'throttled' automatically anyway, so set it high and leave it there. There a lot of settings you can do ingame and on your system that combined make for a more pleasure experience. You said you have a 128kbps upload speed, that maybe a limitation as your client needs to pass back to the SL servers for multicasting to all other clients within view of your avatar. A 20mb bandwidth seems a bit out of sync with only a 128kbps upload. I have a 8mb bandwidth with 512kbps upload, I suffer a lot less lag than many. My advise (short version as I have made many posts about this in the past), have a large cache and defragment that drive everyday. Get as much ram as your system/pocket can support, including Graphics Card ram. A fast hard disc with a minimum 8mb buffer running at a speed of 7,200rpm is a minimum.. perferably install a SATA II Hard disc with 10,000rpm and a 16mb buffer, assuming you have the MB to support such drives. As I said, this is only a short version.

Tegg, If you have a 20Meg connnection, then you've no worries about throttling the download speed. I doubt that SL can push data towards you fast enough to worry. The throttle is for those whose computer connections aren't fast enough to keep up. If you have a 1Meg DSL connection, then it becomes a worry. (( The whole 'trick' is to try to minimize dropped transmissions of data, which must then be resent to your computer. This is easiest done by watching the thermometer in the upper right corner of the viewer screen. If its ALWAYS RED, then you're dropping way too many packets and your successful throughput will actually go UP if you throttle back the download rate.))

Has anyone ever put out a comprehensive guide to all the Preferences, what they do and how to tweak them, for us less tech minded users? Some are ovious, but a lot aren't. At least to me.

At least to me. Its is very subjective to make a list of preferences and settings, simply because there are more in the Client menu (although not sticky) and each combination of setting is relevant to the capabilities of your own system and what sort of experience you wish to acheive. I am sure someone (myself included when I get the time) to maybe take a couple of screenshots and label the main usages for each function, and post them on a website and post a link, rather that choke up the forums with pics.

Nothing fancy is necessary..just a brief description of what each fearure actually does and maybe a general idea if what happens as sliders or adjustments are made. I understand it can't be concise. Thank You.

Preference Descriptions are in the Knowledge Base. Maintained by the Lindens. Try here: http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=335The Resident Forums have a running thread on the actions of some of the debug settings, too.
