I hope this is the correct place to ask this question. Why is my altair so tall? I purchased a set body type and skin which I can not adjust or modify. It is labled as being 65 inches tall, but I seem to be growing in height after each upgrade, Help! lol. I think I'm now about 6foot, 2 inches tall now. If I was a strong young male, this would be fine, but now I shall soon be the next 50 ft. gaint!.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Daphne Carr

The units of the height slider are arbitrary; they're not inches. Otherwise, you would disappear if you set your height to zero. My own avatar is set to height 65, and is about 6 feet tall barefoot. Some of the other sliders also affect your height. For example, if you increase your head size, you will be taller; SL doesn't make the rest of your avatar smaller to keep your height constant. Your shoes also affect your height. A pair of high heels may add as much as 8 inches. Yes, SL heels are quite extreme; fortunately, we can wear them without getting sore feet

There is a free device running around that measures your avitar's height, Yadni's Junkyard likely has them or most folks who have been on a while have one in inventory. The sliders are indeed arbitrary and refer to the position of the slider, 50 is in the middle, 75 is 3/4 of the way, etc and is more the range of adjustment percentage. It is consistant between similar sized avatars though, a "5" foot size is pretty much the same size for every avatar and that is how prim shoes work since they tell you what shoe slider setting to use, usually 0 or 1.

I've dropped a height detector on ya.

The basic height detectors are not entirely accurate. I htink they only measure to the 'camera-height' as they never seem to account for the top of the head. There was a height measuring item that was nearly free by DhS I think.. I'm not sure, I can't find it for sale anywhere anymore. But it would tell you the height most detectors tell you, adn then let you adjust a panel down to the actual top of your AV's head and then report your true height. My big 'Yena AV went from 6'9" according to a standard AV Ruler to 7'5" in actual height.

Is there any way to force the avatar shorter than the current settings which I think is about five feet without shoes?

SL is full of freakishly tall giants. Way back in beta, most avs were 7 footers. To this day, many SL buildings are built for giants. On the other hand, I think the shortest an av can (without using a tiny av) get is 3'-11", but I could be wrong. BTW, Teeny is 4'-8", without shoes.

Too Tall
11-25-2006 20:23
I think I found the problem, I seem to be floating about 6-8 inches above the floor, even when I am not flying. This happens if I am standing, sitting or walking on the ground. It does not seem to effect the way I sit on things.
any Ideas?
Thanks!

Daphne Carr Do you have an animation overrider? Sounds like possibly a problem with that. Easy way to check, remove all attachments and see if you walk ok.

I have used an avatar measuring device somewhere, and it actually measures the height of yourself for you if you touch it. But I forgot where I found it, I think it is in one of those freebie areas. Does anyone remember seeing such a device? If so, could you please let us know where it is? Thanx

Daphne Carr Adios mio! Sounds like maybe a glitch IF you're getting..taller without your discretion LOL...hmm, but as far as the not-being-able-to-modify-your-shape deal, that's just probably because you bought it. The permissions ('perms') are set to 'no mod' (no modify) so you can't look at it in apperance. If you'd like, just IM me in game, and I can hook you up with a custom shape sculpting job. ~~Carina
