I just spent my day shopping for a new computer, making the clerks mad as I prenteded to test SL on each and every notebook they had. Well, my persistence paid off.

I bought a nobrand *notebook* that does 66fps in my garden, 80fps in my skydome and aorund 25-30fps in the welcome area. That is with all and every graphic options on.

I paid 1500 EUR, that is 1.786,95 USD.

Configuration:

Centrino 740 1,73 GHz
LCD 15.4" TFT wide truebrite screen
(!!) Two video cards: built-in intel for low-consumption scenarios and GeForge Go6600 with 256 MB dedicated ram
RAM 1024Mb DDR2 533 MHz
HDD 80 GB 5400 rpm
DVD writer double layer
MODEM - LAN - WLAN b/g
It comes with 3 years guarantee in Italy and 1 year assurance against theft.

CPU: 0.13 micron Intel Pentium III mobile (1733 Mhz)
Memory: 1024 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
OpenGL Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL Renderer: GeForce Go 6600/PCI/SSE2
OpenGL Version: 1.5.3
Packets Lost: 917/409842 (0.2%)
Viewer Digest: c1d2f545-cdef-9a64-09f1-d340bc3b341e

That sounds pretty good, Kitten! What are your graphics preferences set to, and which options do you have turned on, and if applicable, how far? (I.e. shiny, draw distance, and so on.)

Everything on!

All options in Graphics turned on but anisotropic filtering, resolution set to 1280x800 full screen.

Advanced Graphics, everything turned to default values. Except for tree/object/avatar complexity which I pumped to the max and drop distance if <FPS which I set to 20.

Unfortunately the fps in the Welcome Area where taken when it was (strangely) almost empty. I checked again with the normal crowd there and it's not that good, 10-20 fps.

Lets test that assurance against theft guarantee? *flies over to in Italy*
:D
At least my 4 year old video card supports OpenGL 1.5.4 :p

*sobs*

Very good for a laptop indeed.

Just for fun I took a picture in the same area with my desktop. This is with my 4400+ X2 duel core 2 gig memory and 6800Ultra 512 with all the AA and AF filters maxed on the card. Draw was at 160m with everything off except shiny.

I bought it at a computer stores chain called ComputerDiscount, the model is "NB CDC PREMIUM 6963DW DUAL VGA" and it's marketed as their own.

This looks like a rebranding of the Uniwill 256EN laptop.

Wow and freakin cheap too.

I've heard of much higher-config laptops not doing nearly as well! Specs don't tell all, but I wonder what the magic is here?

Umm, that's a bloody high spec laptop. The thing to remember about the Pentium-M chip (as used in Centrino laptops) is that a 1.6GHz chip is about equivalent in processing power to a 2.6GHz Pentium 4. So the chip in the OP's laptop will be about a 2.8 or 3 GHz P4 combined with a GeForce 6.

Yep, it should run well :)

By the way, the bios include an option ("High-Performance Mode";) to overclock the Pentium M to 2 GHz if you use both the AC and the battery :)
